We got up early as we've got a busy day ahead of us today. We had bought some bits for breakfast so we had that before setting off for the Grand Canyon. The drive to the canyon wasn't so bad, it was about an hour in length and not as many cars on the road as we had expected. The queue for the pass to the National Park though did take some time. Once through we drove as far as we could and stopped at the visitor's centre to park. We packed a bag with water and suncream and went to have a look. It didn't take long to get a good view of the canyon. It's so hard to take in what you're actually looking at and the scale of it all. We stood gazing at it for quite some time before taking huge amounts of photographs. We followed the trail which took us along the south rim to the the Grand Canyon Villiage. We stopped off numerous times along the way to take photographs or just to sit and take a look around. The walk was brilliant. Afterwards we caught one of the free shuttle buses back to the visitors centre where the car was parked. The shuttle took a little while with a lot of people but it was really well organised. We had popped into a gift shop at the village but realised we hadn't brought any money with us, so we went back to the car got some money and went in search of a shop. We went into the visitors centre first and watched a short film about how the Grand Canyon came to be, who found it and lived here, this was really interesting. After spending some time in the visitors centre we found the gift shop and bought what we had wanted to buy and got back to the car. There were a couple of view points which could be reached by car so we headed for them. Some of them had an excellent view of the Colorado River which runs through the canyon. It had got to about 4.30pm when we thought we had better get on our way as we are driving to Vegas tonight. We set off, just coming out of the park on the corner of a cross roads there was a family of huge Elk just grazing with everyone stopping for a look and a photograph around them. We had been driving for quite some time when we made a stop at the same Walmart at Kingman as we had before going to the canyon. We got a few bits and stopped at a Del Taco for something to eat as we were both starving by now. Setting off again we had around two hours to go to get to our hotel, it would be 11/11.30pm by then. Our plan though is to drive down Las Vegas boulvard at night to see all the lights. When we got into Las Vegas we had a bit of a nightmare finding the road which leads onto the strip as the sat nav was having some bad times. It didn't take too long to rectify and we were driving down the strip. I've never seen so many lights in my life! The place was packed with people everywhere. Signs and adverts were enormous and the hotels themselves were out of this world huge. At some traffic lights we saw someone throw a glass bottle out of the window, nice. There are lots of sets of traffic lights down the strip, we got to a set moving quite quickly when they were on amber and James put his foot down as he thought this was the safest thing to do. Half way across we heard a police siren and saw a cop on a bike behind us. We pulled over, James apologised explaining why he had done it. The cop was really nice and said to be extra careful because there's lots tourists about and most of them are drunk. He kindly let us on our way, it was 11.30pm by now and we were heading to our hotel. We drove some more of the strip where it just seems to get bigger and better everywhere. We turned off and found our hotel, we got checked in and pretty much fell into bed and asleep.
