Decided to do Fraser Island now as well as in november coz its such a good laugh. Got a really good group who were all up for it: Me, Andy & Matt (Scotland) Ellen, Tish, Jess & Cassie (England) Jonas (Denmark) Lynsey (Ireland) Elen (Wales) Francois (France).
Once the 4x4 was packed up with food & booze we hit the road, me in the pilot seat! Once you hit the sand it is so weird, just have to let the van do its thing. First stop was Lake Mckenzie, such a tranquil place, white sand and clear fresh water lake. Me, Andy, Jonas & Ellen decided to swim across the lake thinking it was only about 200-300 metres, how wrong were we! So many times I thought I wasn't going to make it, I was like a sinking ship, trying to spit out the water I was taking on board. Never been so relieved to be back on dry land.
Sun was going down so it was time to head off and set up camp. But before we left we made a multi-national human pyramid, hopefully the 1st to be done at Lake Mckenzie...what an achievement! You could camp at specified sites but the curfew was 9pm so we set up near the beach. I was head chef that night, with steak and salad on the menu...lovely! Tunes got cranked up & drinking games kicked off...got to know everyone with "I have never"
Up early next morning to make tracks up to Indian Head at the most northern point we were allowed to go. Good few hours in the crappy 4x4 which wasn't good but we were all looking forward to getting there as it's a great place to look out for dolphins, sharks and whales. It was our lucky day! we saw a humpback whale jump out of the water 4-5 times...amazing. Even though it was far away, it was so big it was still clear to see. In time to miss high tide it was back down the island to camp at the Maheno shipwreck. Before sunset we went up to Eli creek, a fresh water river that you can lay down in and flow down it. Bit of a disappointment as it doesn't flow very fast, but it was fast enough for us to have a bottle race
1st Andy (Coles Homebrand) 2nd Me (Mount Franklin) 3rd Matt (Sprite) 4th Jonas (Coke)
Another night to remember and good one to finish the trip!
Another early rise so we had time to get to Lake Wabby. Its not as nice as Mckenzie but its different with all its sand dunes and the water 10x as cold! good fun rolling down the dunes in the water. Only a short stay here and we were off to catch the barge home, a sad moment but all good times to look back on.
