Saigon or Ho Chi Minh, the French name and the North Vietnamese name when Uncle Ho's army kicked out the US Army. A city with 2 names confuses me, but the actual city is pretty strightforward. We spent a day walking through the city at a very leisurely pace. Finding an Italian which did poached eggs for breakfast (to Kim's delight) and an amazing ice cream parlour (called Fanny).
The most moving museum we've been to has to be the War Remnants museum. Which gives an excellent and graphic display of the war. Thought provoking, and leaves you wondering why anyone would go to war with so many civillian deaths and the long term scarring of beautiful countries and beautiful people.
We spent a half day at the Cu Chi tunnels, experiencing guerilla warfare and how these people in the west region lived and fought from claustrophobic tunnels. We first climbed into a 7m very narrow tunnel and the a wider (for the tourists) 100m tunnel. It shoed to us how far people will go to retain their country.
A final experience to mention was going to the local market or "grouping market". The woman in there can't keep their hands to themselves. They actually use this tactic to get you to buy their merchandise. But it had the opposite effect on Kim and I.
A real highlight in Saigon was meeting up with Steven and Shanita. They had been flooded in Hoi An and actually left their hotel lobby via a boat. Crazy. So they were very happy to be in Saigon, and they got to spend an evening with us!!
We left Saigon with a hangover and boarded a flight to Phu Quoc Island (recommended by the Sunday Times travel magazine, via home, via Skype!)
