We decided to push the boat out here and spent 30 USD on a beach bungalow in a resort on Long Beach!! Big spenders we know.
The island is about 60km by 20km so not too big, but the biggest in Nam. It's famous for it's fish sauce, which the airline has banned from their planes due to the pungent smell. So the only way out for a souvenir is by ferry. It's also famous for it's little ridgeback dogs, and there was me thinking they only came from Africa!
The storm up north and possibly Ketsana amde the weather a bit variable. The tide was very high on arrival and they had the "high surf" signs out, "if in doubt, don't go out". I couldn't resist going out and enjoying the surf. When Kim joined me, well lets say the waves got the better of her. Phu Quoc wasn't ready for what it saw!!
All the food was amazing and the fish sauce was actually pretty good. It's brown and caramelly, and salty...not bad.
The island is very chilled and everyone goes there for relaxation. We met some Aussies relaxing on the beach and joined them a couple of nights for dinner. They were very funny and they love their beer chilled, super chilled. Every night they got their own ice bucket on the table. The Vietnamese waiters didn't know what to think! We swapped details so will hopefully hook up with them when we get to Perth. We hope Steve is recovering after he got a hornet in his motorbike helmet, which stung him a couple of times!
We did enjoy a real slice of luxury at La veranda resort, 160 USD per night. We went for dessert. Good times!!
The only real activity we did was navigate our way to south beach on the red dirt track roads on motorbike. The roads are just like in Africa, really undeveloped. But give the island 5 to 10 years and I expect it'll be a different place.
We flew back to Saigon for our last night in Vietnam. We wanted some live music so followed the Lonely Planets suggestion. It was dead, 3 members of staff and no punters never mind a band. They did suggest this other place called "Acoustic, Emotion Talks", which was fantastic. Western music, sung by locals, including a 79 year old woman doing Beatles covers. A great finish to a month in Vietnam.
Next stop Cambodia.
