Our Easy Rider trip...........when we first heard about this we imagined there was only one company which provided these guides and motorbikes to take you into the heart of the country. However within minutes of being in Nha Trang we'd been offered a lot, this is Vietnam afterall, the land of counterfeit!
The guys we had were Bao and Bon. They had done many trips before and had very good English, so after a brief introduction they bagged our rucksacks and strapped them on their bikes and we hit the road. The rucksack formed a great back rest for the trip so it was all surprisingly comfortable. We stopped along the way in fishing villages, a silk worm factory, a textile mnufacturer and any time we wanted photos, we'd pull over. Bao taught us about how the locals fish and how they farm. He showed us peppercorn plants, tea plantations and coffee plantations. Kim even took a bunch of leaves and made her own brew.
All the kids we met cycling to/from school waved and said hello, very friendly and happy faces. The food along the way was usually from a local restaurant, where the guys would order for us, explain what everything is and we would eat. Obviously lots of rice, some seafood and fresh veg. Great value too.
The terrain was pretty varied, some good termaced roads and then some awful pot holed parts. At one point we had to get off to cross this really muddy section. That's when Kim submerged her flip flop and nearly landed on her ass! Very Funny.
Our first night was spent by Dak Lake and the second was in a highland city called Dalat (very cold and grey when we were there). Then our final stop was Mui Ne on the coast again. There wasn't a lot happening here, it has a beautiful beach with good surf but it must just be out of season. We spent one night in a nice beach bungalow and then headed to Saigon.
