Today we lunched in Katherine, in the park on the south bank of the river. Beside the road bridge is an old railway bridge which now serves as a footbridge; the old tracks are still there across the bridge and on both banks. A steam loco sits on these tracks in the middle of the park, so that when you’re standing in the middle of the bridge and look towards the south, it looks like a train is coming onto the bridge towards you ... quite a cool effect. The bridge is a riveted steel beam bridge with several spans, and was manufactured in Newcastle NSW in 1924.
We’re staying at Mataranka, in the tourist park adjacent to the thermal spring. We visited this place on our way north, but didn’t camp here. The boys really love the pool, they were swimming across and back, duck-diving and belly-flopping. If only the pool were bigger, to better accommodate the crowds.
For those of you who have been trying to follow my blog, it seems that when choosing Off Exploring to do it, I failed to detect that it won’t list my posts in chronological order, it only lists them alphabetically by location. How dumb is that? But they are fixing it ... if you browse to http://beta.offexploring.com/brettdonald/blog you can get a chronological list.
