After the disastrous day yesterday, today started a lot brighter. It rained heavily overnight but eventually the sun came out and we had a beautiful warm day. Lauterbrunnen seemed a lot prettier and all in all our dispositions were a lot better too. Yesterday in a small patch of clear weather we went for a walk which took you behind a waterfall. We looked super stylish in our poncho's as you'll see in the photos!
Last night while writing blogs we saw that the waterfall we walked behind during the day was lit up by night. Brett had a go at night photography and our camping chair and washing bowl turned into a makeshift tripod. Nothing like a bit of kiwi ingenuity by my Ziwi (Zimbabwean Kiwi) husband ;)
I can't help but think how much Daniel would love it with the 70+ waterfalls in this valley ... and how much Monique wouldn't like it because of the 70+ waterfalls in the valley :)
With the wet tent packed away again this morning, we figured we'd make the most of our time in Switzerland. We decided that while we're here we must go up the Swiss Alps, so after talking to the guy behind the counter at the camping ground reception we set off. (We weren't as brave / nuts as Danielle and Steve to go paragliding). We took a cable car ride up the mountain and a short train trip across to Murren, a small town which was 1634m high. The views were pretty spectacular and our impression of Switzerland and the Alps improved 100 fold :) We wandered through the village (which apparently is inaccessible by car), took a billion and two photos and headed down in another cable car. There were two really weird cyclists riding the cable car down ... I thought the idea was to get a ride up and then go downhill mountain biking!? Roadies!! We stopped for lunch in Grimmelwald and took the final cable car down.
On the bus ride home we stopped at Trummelbach Falls which is a series of 10 glacier waterfalls inside a mountain. Up to 20,000 litres a second go down the falls. They have created a lift inside the mountain (so you don't have to climb - yay) to bring you to the bottom of the 6th fall. You then walk through tunnels (in the mountain) to see falls 6 - 10. The noise was just crazy and the ferociousness of the water quite breathtaking. We walked down the mountain to see the rest of the falls which were equally as impressive as the top ones. The Trummelbach waterfall made the others in the valley look like trickles!
Eventually we took ourselves away from Lauterbrunnen and headed to Lucerne. No time or energy for sightseeing tonight - we just did some washing instead (very domesticated!).
We've decided to skip Zurich so will be heading off to Liechtenstein (we think) tomorrow after visiting the highlights of Lucerne.
