Day 1 - 30th December
So we left Siargao at about 8.30am. Shared a van to the airport with an Aussie guy from Gold Coast and his Filipino girlfriend. This time Jodi didn't have any one falling asleep on her so that was a bonus. As we were leaving the resort, we drove past a heap of kids that were hanging out on the driveway. As we went past, one of the kids rubbed his hand along the car but he was holding a marble at the same time so it left a massive scratch up the side of the van. The driver wasn't very impressed and, it's terrible to say, but it was quite commical listening to him go angry at this kid in another language. We're so terrible (Brenden any way).
So we get the plane back to Cebu and then the boat to Tagbilaran, Bohol. The airline didn't lose Brenden's bag this time so that was a bonus. From the port we get a car to Panglao Island, about 30mins. We stayed at a place called Bohol Sea Resort. It's about a 25 minute walk from the main part of town. It's run by a German guy who's been in the Philippines for about 15 years. The resort itself if full of German's as well. The service was excellent and the rooms were basic enough. The beach wasn't as good as what we'd hoped but the resort is more designed for divers so I guess that's what you get. The rest of the afternoon was spent around the resort. Jodi was not able to walk on her leg much, her ankle had swelled from the burn and she had trouble putting weight on it without it spliting. So while Jodi layed in bed Brenden made friends with the people next door. The lady was travelling around trying to get photos of the Philippines for her new career path and her boyfriend was funding the trip (typical ) Brenden showed them this blog and told them about Siargao where we had just been. All she did was bag our photos though - might be time to do a photography course........or maybe don't show our blog to professional photographers.........
Day 2 - December 31st
The last day of 2011. Jodi's leg was still giving her grief. Brenden got a taxi to the main town and found a pharmacy where he got some burn cream and some medical bangages. The remainder of the day was just spent lazying around. Jodi's leg slowly started to stop aching to where she could walk on it fairly comfortably.
That night the resort put on a massive meal for everyone staying at the resort. Lechon (pig on a spit) and it was delicous. We also talked to everyone back home who were partying at Ange's place. Was so good to hear everyone's voice and see people on Skype. We believe Matty Sanders got the 'most drunkest' award. Good to see nothing has changed Matty!!!!
We stayed around the resort til about 10pm before heading to Alona Beach, the main strip on Panglao Island. We thought it would have had the same sort of feel to Thailand. Well, we were wrong. This place would have been what Thailand was 20 years ago. The restaurants were all still open with most people just sitting still having meals and chatting away with friends. There were a couple of restaurants that had some live music and we managed to find one bar that had a pretty good atmosphere. The only problem was it was absolutely packed, mainly with white foreigners. Fkn Tourists!!!!! :-P
We ended sitting down at the bar of this restaurant that had barely anyone in it and decided to try all the different drinks on the menu. That only lasted 2 drinks as the restaurant wanted to shut just after 11pm. WTF!!! Before we had finished one of the workers out the back through a fire cracker out into the bar area which landed about 1m away from Brenden. It was so loud. Brenden gave his usual 'you're a f***wit' look before we headed out to find another bar. We ended up drinking cocktails at one of those small bars you see on the beach that has just enough room for 1 person to serve you. It was really cool. From there we saw in the new year, watched thousands of fireworks from the beach before heading home. We were home by 1am - we're getting so old.....
Day 3 - January 1st
As expected, not much happened on this day. Although we didn't drink as much as usual we both still managed to get a hang over. Jodi more then Brenden which is unusal. Brenden is such a p**** these days. We did venture back to Alona beach for a little while. Whilst we were down there we organised another bike for the next day. About the same price as the one in Siargao. Lets hope Brenden doesn't run off the road with this one.
Day 4 - January 2nd
So our bike arrives at about 9am. No checking of licenses or passports - Filipino's are so trusting. From the resort we head back to Tagbilaran and turn East and start heading up the coast line. The scenery is beautiful and the traffic is unreal. Not as bad a Manila but nerve racking none the less. We headed along the coast for about 30 km's before turning North up towards Loboc, Bilar and eventually to the Chocolate Hills. As you head inland, you start heading up in altitude and the scenery starts to change from coastal to more of a rainforest. The road itself gets a wind blowing through and was quite enjoyable on a bike. The highlight is when you drive through what they called the Man-made forrest. 30m trees tower both sides of the road and it's like something from the Amazon, not that we have been there. The air temperature drops dramatically and suddenly too which adds to the experience. You have to do it on a bike as you wouldn't get the full affect in a car or van.
When we finally made it to the top of the range, the land flattens out in rice fields for as far as you can see. It really is something different. We finally make our way to the Chocolate Hills about 2 hours after setting out from the resort. These hills are so cool. They were naturally formed millions of years ago as it the area use to be under water and they are some sort of lime deposits. There are about 100 of them that you can see and than more that you can't. They're like ant hills but about 1000 times bigger covered in grass. They call them the Chocolate Hills as at certain times of the year the grass on them dies and they turn brown, which would look quite different to the lush, green rice fields that surround them. When we were there they were more like Peppermint Hills.
From the Chocolate Hills we headed back towards the coast before turning right towards Sikatuna and to the Tarsier Sanctuary. Tarsiers are these little nocturnal monkeys that are about the size of a fully grown rat. They've got these massive eyes that look completely out of proportion to the rest of their body. They sleep during the day up in the canopy but you can usually see them from the ground. We saw 5 the day we were there. They really are quite cute but they don't really do much as they're trying to get some sleep while the nosey tourists take their picture all day.
From the sancturay we head back through Corella and then battle the traffic through Tagbilaran. You then head back towards Panglao Island and the resort. We were on the bike the whole day so we were pretty stuffed by the end of it. We had dinner down on Alona beach where the food is just awesome. Exactly like Thailand where you walk along and pick your seafood along the footpath and then the restaurant cooks it for you. It's all based on weight and the food is so fresh. So much more relaxed than Thailand, especially in Phuket where everyone wants to make you a suit.
Day 5 - January 3rd
Our last full day of holidays before heading home. Destination - the beach. We spent the entire day on Alona Beach just laying around getting a tan. We had lunch about 10 metres from where we were laying on the beach cause we didn't feel like walking too far. The afternoon was spent drinking cheap beer and cocktails on the beach before watching the sun go down over the ocean. What a perfect end to an awesome holiday. Wish it would last forever..........
