Summary
Morocco - what a country! Our first real taste of a Muslim society and it didn't disappoint. The country itself is amazing, huge gorges and mountain ranges towards the north, sand dunes and desert to the south, a beautiful coastline to the west and vast plains of emptiness in between.
We travelled with Mark and De'anna, the Australian couple we'd met at the top of Spain only a couple of days into our trip. They helped us immensely and we learnt so much from them. We also caught up with Chris, the Englishman we'd met in Algeciras before we crossed over.
In total we spent 4 weeks in Morocco, including Christmas and new years and travelled approximately 4500 km's. We started at Tangier Med where we caught the ferry to, then travelled south through Chefchaouen and onto Volubilis where we spent Christmas. We then continued onto Fes, where we had a run in with local scout trying to get us to stay at his local campground. We didn't get lost in the Medina in Fes as we hired a tour guide thankfully. We then continued further south to Mezouga and Erg Chebbi where we spent NYE out in the desert sand dunes listening to the local Berber Tribe drums - awesome. From here we went North West to Todra and Dades Gorges which are simply mind boggling in size. Further south we ended up at M'Hamid El Ghizlane which is basically the end of the world as people call it. Just a massive desert as far as you can see. We then continued south west until we reached the coast and the arches of Legzira where we took a million photos including some night time star photos. From here we headed north along the coast until we reached Agadir and met up with Chris and spent a couple of days on the beach. We then headed inland to Marrakesh, unreal place, and then headed back out to the coast to Essaouira and then followed the coastline all the way back up to Tangier Med where we caught the ferry back over to Tarifa. We didn't really miss anything we had on our list but we do plan on coming back and going further south to Dhakla at some time.
The car, oh the car. We ended up needing a head gasket replacement in Agadir. If it was going to break then this was the place for it to break. In total we got a new head gasket, the head machined, 4x new glow plugs, injectors serviced, a service on the car and all labour for $300 Australian dollars and all within a day. Crazy!! Apart from that we had no other issues and after the head gasket replacement, Hugo is running much better.
