After waking up from a fairly dis-jointed sleep, we ate, packed up and were on the road by about 9.30am. First stop, Mamukala Wetlands for a spot of bird watching. It's really just a billabong with some water, lilly pads and some birds. Worth a stop none the less.
We then continued east on Arnhem Highway towards Jabiru until we turned left towards Gunbalanya (Arnhem Land). We then stopped in at Cahill's crossing. This is where you cross East Alligator River into Arnhem Land. You need special permission to enter so unfortunately we were stuck on the western side of the river. We did stay and watch some Indigenous Aussies fishing but they didn't catch anything in the 30 minutes we were there.
We then headed a little north to Ubirr. This place was amazing! It's full of Aboriginal Rock Art - heaps of it! We spent ages walking around looking at it all. There is also this beautiful lookout where you've got 360 degrees view of a huge wetland and then back across to Arnhem Land. Apparently the sunsets here a beautiful but we didn't have time to stay. Well worth the trip, highly recommend this place to everyone.
We had lunch at Upper Boat ramp and then started to head back towards Jabiru. Once we got back to Arnhem Highway, we had to double back to Aurora as Jodi had left her phone at the campsite. Muppet! We finally got into Jabiru at about 2.30pm and left at about 2.50pm. Wasn't much to see at Jabiru but we did have phone reception for the first time in a couple of days.
Left Jabiru and headed south on Kakadu Highway. We dropped into Bowali Visitor Centre. This place was really well set up with a really good art gallery. We spent about an hour here walking around before continuing south. We stopped in at Anbangbang Billabong. Again just another mass of water with some lilly pads and some birds but we did see a pig playing in the mud. We then headed to Nourlangie Rock and did the Barrk Walk to Gunwarddehwardde Lookout. There was more Aboriginal Rock Art at Nourlangie Rock and the lookout was pretty amazing.
After this we continued south on Kakadu Highway until we pulled into Muirella Park for the night at about 5ish. We had dinner and showered before settling down and watching a slide show that one of the Park Rangers put on. It was really interesting and we learnt a fair bit about the history of Kakadu and how their woking to preserve it. It also focused on the Buffalo and how they came to be in Kakadu and the damage they did. Crashed out at about 8.30pm, was pretty wrecked. Looking forward to tomorrow and going to Jim Jim Falls.
