Well we quite possibly had one of the worst night sleeps on record. The airconditioner kept cutting in and out and everytime Brenden breathed, the bunk bed squeeked for about 3 minutes. Not to worry, 2 hours sleep isn't going to dampen our spirits. We had breaky in Darwin CBD, got our maps and passes from the tourist info centre then checked out of the backpackers. Then we proceeded to lug all our s*** nearly 2 km's to the Wicked Campers dealer to pick up our van.
Mitsubishi Delica - Diesel, Auto, about 5 years old and 319K on the clock. Message on the back door said "Have a sex change, swap your partner." Pretty average on this inside but perfect for where we're going.
And we're off - No! Groceries! Head to Woolworths for supplies. $150 worth of food and s*** - more then our weekly shop and we're only going for 5 days.
And we're off - No! Seafood! Head to the fish market to get some prawns and fish. Finally found it after getting lost for about 15 mins.
And we're off - No! Fuel! Bloody car was nearly empty. $80 to fill it, should get us a fair distance.
And we're off - No! Lunch! We went and had lunch at the museum at Fannie Bay. Scoffed down 1kg of Banana Prawns - delicious!
And we're off - Yes! Jump on the Stuart Hwy heading for Kakadu, passed Humpty Doo Pub and into the park. First point of call was 2 Mile Hole. Jodi wanted to see some wild crocodiles. 12km dirt track with 3 creek crossings. The water came up to the bottom of the doors through the deepest crosssing. The mighty Delica held it's own though. Rocked up at 2 Mile Hole and within about 30 secs, a small croc, probably around 1.5m long curried into the river about 12 metres to our left. No quicker had the croc started to move, Jodi had ran while slightly squealing back to the car and was sitting in the front seat. Brenden thought this was extremely funny and once Jodi's heart rate had gone down and the adrenaline had left her system she also saw the funny side.
After spending some time at 2 Mile Hole we started heading back. In the process, Brenden tried to start the car whilst it was still in drive. Consequently it blew the fuse that controlled the speedo, overdrive and the lights that tells you what gear you're in. No biggy. Bulls***!!!! Within about 5 km's of getting back on the highway the car started to over heat cause it was reving too high. Pulled over and swapped it with another fuse. Now we don't have any central locking - meh, its a van.
First stop for the night was Aurora Kakadu Resort about 2km's west of South Alligator River. This camp site was beautiful. It was grassed and shady and had all the admineties that you could need while camping. In the process of driving from reception to the camping area, Brenden tried to start the car in drive again - there goes another fuse! Deal with it in the morning, too hungry to be worried about the car. In the process of cooking barramundi fillets topped with garlic and prawns, the local mob of mosquitoes decided it was also dinner time. We called it quits about halfway through dinner to go and buy some aeroguard.
Decided to have an early night so we set up in the back of the van. We both sweated our ring out for the first half of the night, then shivered our asses off for the remaining half. We also played snap with about 4 mosquitoes that got trapped inside the car for the night. All in all, we loved the first day of holidays!
