Today we were off to Cuba but firstly we had to tackle sending a box of winter clothes to Australia so we didn't have to lug them around all the hot countries we would now be travelling. $107 later our 6.5kg box was hopefully heading for home & we were soon heading for the airport for our West Jet flight to Santa Clara, Cuba. With $13.40 left in change we had 2 x soup meals at Tim Hortons (soup/chilli, roll, coffee & donut) which totalled exactly that. At the gate our flight was nearly an hour late departing & once again flying put me to sleep until close to landing. It was hot & balmy as we climbed down the aeroplane steps on arrival in Cuba & being a small airport it didn't take too long to get through immigration & customs and we were met by our Casa Particular owners who transported us to town after changing some Canadian $$ into CUC (convertible pesos). We spotted our first old classic cars right in the airport car park but unfortunately none of them were our ride, our casa owners had an 1980's sedan which smelt of petrol. A slightly white knuckle drive to the casa after orderly US & Canada we pulled up in a cobblestone street which was dark & narrow with each house closed off by big heavy wooden doors with windows covered by decorative metal bars. After settling in (we booked a room with 2 beds but they had given it to a family so we had to share a queen at the noisy front of the house) the owner recommended a restaurant who would pick us up which seemed a safe choice as it was a bit dark & spooky out when we didn't know where we were going. The restaurant was just a few minutes drive & turned out to be a bit touristy & over priced. I had roast chicken which was tasty but just turned out to be just two drumsticks with rice with beans & salad. Mum & I had a glass of wine each which was the cheapest part at $2. In total we paid around $25AUD each but with a free lift each way & not keen to explore the dark streets it was a meal all the same. Returning to the casa we retired to our slightly noisy but luckily air conditioned room for the night.
