We arrived in Stone Town, Zanzibar on Wednesday by a 2 hour ferry from Dar es Salaam.
Stone Town is an amazing town built by the arabs who used to trade slaves and spices. The buildings are all built from stone (who would have guessed) and had small alleyways between the buildings. Very touristy with upmarket shops and restaurants.
On Thursday we did a spice tour and got to see the spices (cademon, vanilla, cinamon, mace, nutmeg, lemongrass etc) all being grown and explained how they were harvested. We finished the tour by trying different teas (ginger, lemongrass, masala) and fruit (custard apple, jack fruit, pineapple, oranges that looked green on the outside).
Then a local meal (spiced rice, salad, spinach made from pumpkin leaves), before heading to the north coast.
The water is so blue and really warm.
Friday was spent on a snorkelling trip to Mnemba atoll, which unfortunatly was a 2 hour ride there and water was a little rough so I got sick (luckily didn't throw up).
But the fish were amazing when we got there so made up for the ride. Beautiful purple fish, little nemo fish, zebra fish, yellow fish, the funny triangle looking fish. We spent 1 and a half hours snorkelling (split between two different stops) before another local lunch on the beach.
We had new sunblock to try which was a spray on, and unfortunately we later learnt that it also needed to be rubbed in to avoid patches. So now we both have multi coloured backs.
We will enjoy another evening meal looking over the ocean and seeing the beautiful African sunset.
Off to Dar es Salaam tomorrow for 2 long travel days to Malawai.
