Drove 4 hours from Nairobi to our first campsite in the Lake Nakuru national park.
Tents are dome canvas tents and fairly roomy and easy to put up.
Lunch was sandwiches with tomatoe, cucumber and cheese and this is to become a very common lunch (alternated with coleslow instead of the tomatoe and cucumber).
Washing hands is done before eating every meal in a 3 step process. Washing in first bowl with soap, second bowl with detol and the last bowl with water to rinse.
Washing dishes is then also done in the same process except the last bowl is boiling hot water (different bowls), and then drying is done using "flapping" which means that we grab the dishes and then wave or flap them about until they are dry. Luckily because they are washed in hot water they are quick to dry unless of course you get the ginormous pot last when the water is no longer hot. But is adds to the trip and we do look a sight the whole group standing around flapping bowls. Hygeine is really important.
Weather isn' particularly hot and in the evenings we were wearing jerseys.
Afternoon was a game drive and we drove past the lake and saw lots of Flamingoes, apparantly there are about 1 million of them here in the park and it is an amazing site.
We then saw lots of Buffaloes, Zebras, Antelope, a mother and baby Rhino and a few other rhinos. The last one we saw was only 2 metres from the truck and we got some pretty good shots. The truck is up high and the windows slide down so we can get a good view out the sides and to take shots.
We also saw a leopard, although to be honest is was so far away and then it ran up a tree. With the camera on full zoom you can just tell is a leopard.
The next day on our drive out of the park we also saw a lion. Again in the distance and it was partly hidden behind bushes so we're looking forward to getting a better shot.
Our guide said our group has been very lucky as by our second day we have seen 4/5 of the Big Five (Buffaloes, Rhino, Leopard, Lion) with only the elephant to go.
There were cold showers but they looked pretty discusting so most people chose not to use the facilities.
Great start to the trip
