Damoy Point (-64.8183022, -63.4969230)
Today's morning land was over the Gerlache Channel in Dorian Bay on Damoy point. This is a sheltered bay just west of Wienke Island -64 degrees 49 minutes south and 63 degrees 32 minutes. We saw two huts at Damoy but didn't manage to visit either. The Argentinian hut was a depot hut and stored provisions and the British 'Damoy Hut' was on the schedule - but taken of it when we found the Brits were in the process of painting it. It was originally opened in 1973 and last used in 1995, primarily serving stations to the south like Adelaide Island. In fact they used to land a plane here on skis to take them to stations further south. It was a truly excellent landing and finally, finally we got to see a chunk of ice crack of a shelf and go boom! One of those things that you have to be very lucky indeed to get a photo of - but we saw it and heard it and that's the main thing.
In the afternoon we were supposed to go cruising in the vicinity of Port Lockroy but didn't make it in due to weather (which also meant the polar mail from the ship was not delivered to the Port Lockroy post office - bit of a shame). We did buy some postcards on the ship though and we'll post them in due course. It was a peaceful afternoon after the rib crusing was cancelled. The ship progressed on and we cruised the Peltier Channel (separating Doumer and Wienke Island and only surveyed in 2019). We then ship cruised up and back along the Lemaire Channel during the evening. About 3 am the ship met up with one of her sister ships (Fram or Nansen) for some equipment swaps. Definitely still no cloudberries. We enjoyed dinner in Fredheim and watched the stunning Lemaire Channel in all its glory. Then movie-chilled in the cabin. Great day.
