It is sooo easy to lose track of days while on holiday ! :)
I find myself having to give considered thought to work out which day it is...
As we are past the date line for Australia, I'm actually typing this Sunday morning, and it's about 1.00am Monday morning in Perth... Maybe I'm just getting old... Nah...
Friday for us was a quiet one. We slothed around the home for most of the morning, trying to plan the next steps of the trip. We now have most of it sorted until Friday 25th (very exciting), but still not 100% sure after that.
As I mentioned, the sheer enormity of the country makes travelling distances between cities an important consideration, even more so than Australia. In Europe, we were 3 - 4 hours away from just about anywhere, so if we needed to back track, it wasn't a major issue.
The plan thus far is to eventually get a flight from here to New Orleans and probably a car from there to Florida / Miami...
Prior to leaving home, Brad had heard rumours of Nike shoes and Apple products being cheap in the US...
We are here to tell you, not much is cheap in the US !!
Nike shoes retail for about $140.00 and Iphone 5s is $600.00, remember, it's USD.
As an example, Brad ordered a burger for lunch at a cafe in our shopping mall in the suburbs, a nice cafe, but just a cafe.. Menu price was $16.00 + 12% tax + 20% gratuity + rounding to the nearest dollar so you don't look like a cheapskate and we're at about $25.00...
Having said that, Fuel and Cigarettes are cheap. Fuel equates to less than $1.00 / Lt and a pack of 20 Marlborough go for about $3.75.
Sounds obvious I know, but you really do notice the huge amount of tobacco advertising. The Marlborough Man is alive and well in the US, with no sign of lung cancer yet !..
I wonder if anyone still falls for the image...
In that vein, I wonder if anyone still comes to Hollywood with the dream of making it in the movies? The radio is full of advertisements inviting you and your off spring to "Come on in for a casting audition" (you have to say that with a typical American spruiking voice). Probably a little cynical, but I can see all the beautiful Moms rolling up with their beautiful children, handing over their hard earned cash for a photo shoot..
Our comedian tour guide has to give 40% of everything he earns on stage to his manager, whether the manager got him the gig or not.. Freddie (the tour guide) had a bit part in "Million Dollar Baby", he was the ref that pulled Hillary Swank off her rival in two of the fight scenes.
After ordering lunch about 3.30pm, we headed off for the mundane task of laundry, an interesting experience in LA, and eventually made it home around 8.30pm...
