Day 12
Today we decided to go for an early walk to a place called Yaki Point before leaving the Grand Canyon for Lake Powell. Early morning temperatures here have been really high so we have been drinking lots and lots of water to help avoid dehydrating. We are all looking forward to Lake Powell because we are ready to get into the water to cool off as it seems that the temperatures have been up in the 100’s during the day since Las Vegas. On the way out from the Grand Canyon we stopped at a viewpoint called Desert View, there is a stone tower there that was designed by a Scottish architect called Mary Colter and built in the 1930’s that gives views all the way to the North, South and West Rims and views out towards the Painted Desert. Our tour guide from yesterday evening said that it was her favourite viewpoint in all of the Canyon. We left the Canyon heading East towards Navajo country, where we stopped to buy some hand-made native Indian jewellery, before turning North towards Page and Lake Powell. On the way into the National Park at Lake Powell we drove over the Glen Canyon Dam which is nearly as big as the Hoover Dam. We stopped at WalMart to buy some bits and pieces for dinner and I bought a frisbee, beach ball and a Halo sniper figure. We went on to the campsite at Wahweap and found our pitch which looked out over the lake. Chris hooked up the RV and started a barbecue while Mum sorted out the salad. We bought some ribs thinking they were pork but they were beef and took ages to cook but after waiting an hour or so for them they were really nice. I got Chris his beers from the fridge and he was happy, the more I got the happier he seemed to be. It is still really hot here and we are all looking forward to spending some time on the lake tomorrow. After dinner we all sat outside the RV and I read some stories from a book that I bought at the Grand Canyon called ‘Over The Edge: Death At The Canyon’ which documents all the weird and wonderful deaths that have occurred over the years there. While we sat outside a huge spider crawled all the way along the canopy of the RV and I got teased by Chris because I hate spiders. Mum and Chris had a few more drinks and then we headed to bed.
