Our guide Einsten meets us on the dock, he's wearing the same jacket as many of the Cruise organised tour guides, hopefully that's a good thing. We head towards the bus, which one is it? That little transporter isn't big enough for all of us, we're a party of 11! No Einsten is taking us around a few other busses and presents us our own city bus - as in a full size city transport bus, just for the 10 of us! Kids are knocked out!
The little fjords we've been in this week are where Norway harvested its wealth, but here in Bergen, this is where the Hanseatic league took that produce and sold it on to the world. Once again the architecture here is the story of wooden buildings that burn down, once, twice, then innumerable times. Einsten has a wealth of stories as we take a bus tour of the city, there is almost every architectural style from the past 300 years readily available. The size of the city is impressive for just 250k inhabitants. But it's all too much for Fid, he's asleep just a few minutes in :)
Edvard Grieg's house is the main attraction of the city, we take a stroll around what I think was his summer house, Troldhaugen. But the really impressive piece is his waterside composition house, Inspiration would be high, though I can imagine productivity perhaps less so. Grieg's fascination with Trolls is funny given his own height, Fid stands next to a full size statue and "DOMINATES" the inanimate object.
We head back through downtown and on to the old dock area Bryggen. The Tyskebryggen, or German Wharf is where the Hanseatic League set up their Northern headquarters. These houses were established to preserve and house the Stockfish, or Dried Cod that they had caught out in the Fjords before they were then sold and traded with the rest of the world from this base. This is a UNESCO protected area with many of the houses dating back to the 14th century - amazing!
We have our last Norsk lunch in a restaurant inside the old Hanseatic League headquarters. Whale, pickled Herring, Aquavit and a Bergen brew, Gab has the Mussels, they look so good Fid decides to try one and astounds himself - now he can't wait to have them in Belgium. After lunch, we check out the Hanseatic Museum then head over to the "Can't Miss It" fishmarkets. More Whale, the brown cheese we discovered yesterday and MONSTER crab. Later we learned that these giant crabs were introduced into the area by Stalin, but are long the cane toads of Norway. They have no predators, eat everything, and each female can lay 300-400k eggs each season - so eat up!
It's bucketing down so we head back to the ship for a 4th of July dinner and Frozen deck party. Boo and the little-little man get themselves on stage for the start of the party, then can't stop dancing for the next hour. Their excitement is infectious so it wasn't long before we were all up "Freezing the night away" for our last night in Norway. Though, "night" seems a bit of a stretch, still big bright sky at 11pm!
