Such a big city, our first mistake was to assume it was like most other cities, well documented, well understood, easy to find highlights. We started researching last night, picked out the few highlights we thought sounded interesting and the figured we'd make the most of our last day of shopping in Italy. We're just a few hours south of Milan, has to be good right?
Well on a Monday most shops don't open in the morning. The morning ends around 3:30 when those that were open until lunch, re-open for evening trade. Most blogs & tripadvisor talk about two main shopping streets, Via Caffa (outlets) and via San Luca (shoes) both are run down empty streets with absolutely none of their renowned content. They're also half an hour walk apart.
So we arrived around 11 in a dead city. As an ancient city there are many areas of condensed alleys where GPS won't work, data was also sketchy so finding our way around was full of mis-turns. We spent 4-5 hours walking in what would eventually resemble a rumba cleaning pattern around the city. There was no (open) interesting stores. We didn't do enough research to appreciate the architecture or landmarks, we had a clanger of a day.
The best part? It was only half an hour back to Rapallo. Tomorrow is Nice, we're busy researching tonight!
