So we decided to head south and booked a flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and then a little propeller engine jet plane to the lovely little Island called Phu Quoc which is really close to Cambodia. We needed some sun, sea and sand and somewhere to have a holiday for a week or so in order to recharge our batteries and chill out. We stayed in a beach front bungalow and sunbathed and ate, slept and drank for a few days. We met an Australian couple on the plane who were staying at the same Sea Star Resort and they were called Shane and Mich (Michelle) who we had a few beers with in the sea when we arrived!
We then hired a scooter so that we could explore the Island a little bit more......Brad did the driving and I nervously went on the back. Once I got over the lorries overtaking and pulling out and the cows in the road it was a beautiful way to travel and see places that we wouldn't have necessarily got to see otherwise. We spent all day driving around and went to a lovely beach called Bao Sao which upon arrival was your picture postcard with soft white sand and turquoise water and we were thinking wow this is the place we would like to stay for the next few days. We then went for a stroll down the beach and noticed the horrendous amount of rubbish that was littered all the way down the beach, just meters from the water front. So if you looked out it was beautiful but when you turned around and looked behind the whole image was ruined. Such a shame! We then headed back to drop the bike off and as we were driving I was looking around and taking everything in and Brad swerved the scooter a little away from the side of the road as he had seen a snake which had reared up on the road side ready to attack the bike! Blimey crikes!!
We then decided later in the week to go on a snorkelling trip out to the An Toi Islands so spent a really great day on a boat. We stopped off first and went fishing for our lunch. We had some really simple rods and fished and we both caught a fish each which was very cool. We then stopped off and snorkelled at 3 different sites on the islands and saw some nemo fish, some parrot fish which were an array of beautiful colours and also some really electric aqua blue fish which were awesome. It was really good to go snorkelling and have a good day out.
On our last night we had dinner with a really nice couple that we had met in the week called Marcus and Mia who were from Austria and Slovenia. They smuggled gin into the restaurant and we smuggled some wine in and had a really nice meal and Mia had a really infectious laugh (especially after a large gin) so we ended up having a real giggle with them. Our phrase for our whole holiday is 'life is what you make it' and Mia disagreed saying 'gin is what you make it'!!!!!
After a week on the beach we were ready to start moving again and start heading to the Mekong Delta......
p.s. please ignore the dates on the map.....we were a bit slow in updating as some internet places don't work all the time or are really limited!
