What a journey! The night bus was definitely an experience that perhaps we wouldn't be keen to do again. It was a very strange experience lying in a plastic bed that wasn't even big enough to put your legs out straight in. They had two flaps at the side where you could stick your feet out of so just down from your head was someones elses toes pointing out!!! It was a novelty at first but when you tried to lay down to get comfortable for the journey it was a bit of a nightmare. There were bars on either side which I think were to stop you from rolling out due to the drivers driving. I spend most of the night using my core muscles to stabalise myself to stop me from sliding out and down into the plastic footwell as the driver swerved and bounced along the dusty roads for 10 hours. The other thing was that the sleeper bus was full but the driver still let on some Vietnemese guys who ended up sleeping in the aisles and by the toilet.......I dunno but we were just thinking health and safety and also watching our bags........it turned out that they were ok though. They did however decide in true vietnemese style, with no social grace, to play some Vietnemese music loudly as the driver turned out all of the lights! Nice! The only nice thing about the journey was that we got to see the sun rise which was really good.
So 10 hours later and feeling stiff and exhausted we arrive in Hoi An which is a slightly older town than others that we have been too and is a little bit calmer in comparison. The first hotel that we got dropped off at we didn't like too much so walked more into the centre of town and stayed in an ok place (no rats!) with a great view of a wall. It was clean which is the main thing. We walked around Hoi An to get some breakfast and found that the place is full of tailor shops making anything from coats to dresses etc. We wondered round for ages and found a really nice shop with a lovely Vietnemese lady called Flower and each bought a winter coat (I know it's 35C+) and a frock for Mrs Brown. Very cheap and really well made! Well we couldn't come all this way and not get anything made!
We met a really nice couple called Holly and Toby who have been travelling since Dec and have been to New Zealand and Australia as well as South East Asia and had interesting chats with them about New Zealand. They are now heading up to China for their final month before heading home back to Cornwall.
We are heading back down to Saigon so that we can work out where we are going to go from there for the next step!
