Brett & Lindsay's Travels
We wrapped up our Germany leg and just arrived in Prague. Before I talk about Germany I have to say that the Mozart concert was amazing. When we arrived back at our Pensione later that night I went to open the outside door and heard a car screach on the breaks and a van door slide open. Freaked me out at first trying to get the lock open, then pale guy with dreadlocks jumped out naked and started to shake his w***er at us, jumped back in and drove away. Went immediately from fear to laughing
We took the early train to Munich for Oktoberfest. People walking around everywere in leterhosen ? and traditional dresses for the women. I thought only the performers at the beer tents wore those clothes. It turns out all of Bavaria wears the weird traditional garbs, and I came to find out that some people wear those types of clothes around all year long. How weird.
After a traditional meal of sausages, preztels, and dumplings, we took a knap and headed toward the festival. When we got of the train, lindsay stopped to use a pay phone. As soon as she picked up the phone a heavy set man dressed in leterhosen around 55 years old came crashing down the stairs in the train station and his head bounced off of the ground immediatly uncounscious and bleeding. He never came too before we left, I hope he is ok, but it was a hell of a way to start a party.
I knew about the big beer tents at Oktoberfest, but I honestly never knew that Oktoberfest is a carnival with rollercoasters and fair type rides everywhere. I don't know who thought up the idea of drinking massive quantities of beer and then flinging themselves around on moving objects. Since we got there late, there were people, mostly young kids getting sick everywhere and paramedics running around like madmen. Again, not something to get you in the beer drinking mood. Anyway, we found a smaller beer tent and rode some rides.
The second night we were able to get there early enough to get a seat in the Pauliner tent and had a blast drinking beer and dancing on the tables to polka and other american songs. It ended up being a lot of fun. We had a dead battery on the camera the first night, and a miscommunication the second night, so we only got a few pics on a disposable. Oh well. Check out the web if you want to see what it looks like.
We took a two hour train and spent the next two nights in Fussen at the southern end of Germany. It is in the edge of the Alps and was a leaping point to go see the castles of mad king Ludwig II. Neuchwanstien Castle is the castle that the disney people ripped off when they designed Cinderella's castle. A lot of beautiful scenery and a little relaxing after the mayhem in Munich.
Bavarians consider themselves Bavarians first, and Germans second. It is not the same experience that I had in 'high' germany. In fact 'high' germans claim that they can hardly understand the monosylavic german that the Bavarians speak. I mean no offence, but it only seems that they are a few centuries behind, and they aren't very amiable people, in fact I found them to be downright rude at times. Love the food and beer though.
As I said, we just arrived in Prague and so far the people are much nicer and acceptable of tourists. We'll be here for three days and fly out to Rome. Regretfully, due the poor exchange rates, and the costs associated with the logistics of travelling to Greece and back, I had to cut it out of our trip. Lindsay is posting pics, and we'll try to get our disposible developed ASAP. Stay Classy USA. RJ
