Brett & Lindsay's Travels
We spent three days in Prague. I checked the Prague phonebook and no, there are no Poraks remaining in and around Prague. The first full day we spent wandering old town Prague. We picked up a bus tour that took us all around the city and dropped us off for 40 minutes at Prague Castle and Prague Cathedral, massive buildings on the crest of a hill overlooking the river and the city. I am ashamed to say that I really didn't know of most of the people mentioned on the historical tour. I guess we don't learn much about eastern civilizations in history (we seen to leave that out) We spent alot of time shopping and eating in and around Wenchalas Square and Old Town Square. It's really a beautiful european town that still has a lot of narrow cobblestone streets since it was never harmed during WWII. As seen in the picture above, the city can appear very medival and gothic. The city is shedding it's former communist aura and is becoming a booming capitalist country that is gaining a lot of popularity with tourists. Especially college kids since the good Czech beer is still so cheap, only about $.75 at a bar. At some tourist stores you can buy old communist parephenalia like the soldier hats, fur hats, coats, gas masks, etc.
We spent the second day walking around again and taking a trip the the Charles bridge, the only medieval bridge left in Europe seen in the picture above at night, inspiring the creepy Franz Kafka tales. It's a very romantic bridge, especially when seen along with the over two hundred spires in the background. We bought a couple of photo's. We ate the second night at an old world czech restaurant two levels below ground in an old cavelike wine cellar. The place was draped with animal furs, taxidermy, and had an actuall pig on a spit cooking in the corner of the restaurant. There was a four man band dressed in turn of the century clothing playing old czech songs while we ate roast pork, dumplings, roast chicken, and beer cheese out of a cast iron skillet. Lindsay was a little freaked out by all of the animals staring at her while we ate, but it was definitely the highlight of my trip to Prague! Some interesting pics to follow. We caught a flight out to Rome. I've spent some time in Rome before, so Lindsay will write the posting. Stay classy USA!!
