"I'm going to look that up when I get home: how to lick out a girl like John Snow." - Chris Christodoulou
Today has been the most productive day by far; covering a decent amount of miles, eating some good grub and stopping off at multiple roadside attractions that really made the day. It didn't start so well as our sleep was disturb by ridiculous thunder and lightning - we did however, survive the night and weren't killed. Go us! We got up early and worked our way towards Springfield for some breakfast.
Breakfast was amazing; we ate breakfast out of a skillet, which included shredded hash browns, eggs, steak and chilli... yes you read correctly, chilli! It went down a treat, and to top it all off the staff we pretty chuffed about our presence and signed a couple hats for us to take away... erm, thanks Alison, Kimberly and Katlin.
We pulled over to explore a derelict barn that looked like it had been deserted for years. Thank god we pulled up during the day as it is highly likely that Chris may have followed through. We're breaking him in gently before we plan to leave him with the hillbillies in a ghost town in the middle of nowhere - we love you Chris!
We continued through Joplin and to the state-line between Missouri and Kansas, where we took some pictures as evidence that we could be in two places at once - and we were! Then came one of the highlights of the day; pulling into a roadside cafe to enjoy a cheeky hotdog (at the superb price of 2 for $1) and spend some quality time with Tow Mater... yes, THE Tow Mater that inspired that character from the film 'Cars'.
Having crossed paths with a group of Australians, the women at the roadside cafe thought we were together; we cleared that mistake up straight away:
Roadside Cafe Women: Are you guys with them?
Chris: No, they're Australian and we're English.
Australian: (walking out of the toilet) There's a big difference, a huge difference.
Chris: Yeah, we win at cricket.
England 1-0 Australia
We continued our journey for a couple of miles up the road to pull over at the Marsh Rainbow March Bridge, which was really impressive as it's the only remaining marsh arch bridge on Route 66. After a mere 13 miles in Kansas we strolled into Oklahoma!
Strolling through the next few towns as the unstoppable force that we were, we travelled in convoy behind a group of Spaniards on their Harley Davidson's before we stopped at an atone of the original steel bridges along route. Continuing, we pulled over to check out a massive blue whale parked up alongside the road. It's a little difficult to describe its purpose, so we'll just let the pictures do the talking when we upload them.
Times became tough and the Mother Road tried to send us off course several times, starting with Tulsa*. Having hit our target location for the day, we were in high spirits and decided to crack on for a couple more towns; after a cheeky stopover at McDonalds (where we were again oversea celebrities) we swapped driver and found ourselves caught in a spaghetti junction of highways. Screw you Tulsa; we survived, found our way back to US66 and moved on with our day... The Mother Road 2-1 Boys on Tour. Boom!
*FYI, we've discovered that despite Chandler getting the horn over sharks in Tulsa, not many other people do... shark porn just isn't popular.
Once again, Oklahoma threw us off guard, this time succeeding as we went about 40 minutes out of our way. This resulted in us checking in near on 8.30pm and left us with nothing to do as the town we ended up in turn their lights out about 9pm. It was nice to relax and get an early night - tomorrow's destination is ambitious... Amarillo, Texas!
Message from Nick: Apologies to any of you who witnessed my bare-nakedness on Facebook over the past 24hrs; there was a LAD point for the taking, and I took it... even if it came at the cost of my teaching career. Whoops.
Goodnight & God Bless x
