I wasn't going to add another blog about this place as it was a bad experience for us both, but feel like I need to share the good and bad. Oh, and we survived it, s**t it out, literally, and made our night train!
Our first night there was simple; relax, explore, eat then sleep. But nothing is simple is india, I got ripped off for a suit, although it is amazing, more on this later.
The following morning we went to the Amber Fort- Sinead's favourite so far. It takes about 10 minutes to walk up and is a sweat fest- even with the locals! I was hoping the elephants would be there to treat Sinead, but it was there day off! :( at the top and inside we explored the many corridors, Turkish baths, halls, stairs, etc! It was a maze that we had a free reign over. They even provided scales at the start to check your weight before and after.
After we went to an organic spice shop, hoping to see an array of bright colours but all we saw were spices in bags and a recovering opium addict that had quit fags but was still smoking! Within 30 minutes of sitting and smelling or tasting every spice you can imagine we were feeling rather dizzy (high) ourselves. We also spent £4 on some organic chai masala tea, which we both love and drink most days with fresh ginger after our first taste in Agra.
I think it's safe to say after a mixed morning we needed to chill. Our driver left and we arranged to meet later to try the suit and Sinead's ali baba jumpsuit. I slept for a few hours so we were feeling fresh and wanted a beer!
The suit needed three alterations, after they were made it was perfect! We left happy, got dropped off at the hotel and decided to ditch our driver after he had taken us to the main bazaar: a long, narrow road full of the same s***! It was here my heart dropped... I took the risk of going into another suit tailors and asked the price- it was under half what I had paid and granted his best wasn't the same quality I had, but knew I had been royally caught with my pants down. Beer was definitely needed! We found one bar- it was s*** but we were able to buy fags for 13rupees each! :)
We knew of a place called 100% Rock so found a tuk tuk to take us. Wow... English music, a beer garden, cocktails and air con, are you sure this is Jaipur Sinead? Inside I waited for 10mins to wee and nearly dribbled! Hehe. We soon realised it was 2-4-1 for foreigners so had two gins, two cocktails and tequilas. Back in the beer garden we sat with three locals, one was a lawyer and the other one said he was a cricketer- clearly turned out to be bulls*** and just another wannabe con artist. More tequilas went back and after more bulls*** stories we soon realised the wannabe was a twat. This was backed up when his mate told us not to trust him and agree to anything! His words were, "we can't change the person, but I can warn you!" Deep- the local was clearly a modern Indian with morals and respect, only the second one we'd met. It was this dude we went to watch the cricket with on the outside of Jaipur and the family treated us to a traditional lunch.
However, before we went to the cricket I was still angry about the suit and needed to resolve it, well Sinead did as the evening before I had already kicked off. Sinead decided I needed to stay out the way and leave it to her. About twenty minutes later we were escorted off the premises a 50% refund. Happier we moved on.
There were pros and cons to Jaipur. We met some great people and travellers alike, who had all fell for the Delhi scams. But we were happy to be catching our first train night train out of there and going solo without our driver!
