Home to Ankor Wat, one of the largest and most impressive ancient monuments on earth, Siam Reap has been popular with tourists for a long time and so has a very developed tourist scene. It has a fine array of bars, restaurants and hotels and they're all very cheap and good quality! You can get an evening meal for $1 (65p) and a beer for $0.50 (33p). Its also painfully easy to meet people! As such I partied almost every night - most of the time till 6am! And met some really cool people from all over the world!
During the day the main attraction is Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. Even though people tell you that they're impressive, its very hard to appreciate the sheer scale of the buildings until you get there. Really, they're more like several small cities close to each other and you can imagine the people that lived there all that time ago. Apparently there were 1m people that lived in the area for the 400 years from 800-1200AD. After this time they were conquered by neighbouring kingdoms and infighting. However, at its peak it is easy to imagine something similar to the inca or myan societies in Central America but on far grander scale. One particular temple has thousands of faces carved into its walls. These being to represent the many subjects of the Khmer king.
