After an 'interesting' flight from Siep Reap on a propeller plane, we've enjoyed our four nights on Phu Quoc island - a place to chill out and relax.
The majority of the hotels are located on Long Beach which runs down the west coast of the island (getting the best of the sunsets!)
For the first two nights, we stayed at Daisy Resort. We soon came to love the views from our veranda, the full size pool table (once the German boys had stopped hogging it) and the poolside bar (taking advantage of the happy hour two for one!). Whilst staying there, we ventured to the night market in the main town and enjoyed the freshly caught fish at the excellent Palm Tree Restaurant located nearby.
For the other two nights, we stayed at the beach club. Although more rustic in nature - we made friends with a couple of lizards and cockroaches throughout our stay (one of which was so attached to us that it climbed into our luggage as we were about to leave!) - it was a special experience sleeping so close to the ocean (not to mention being significantly cheaper than the nearby resorts!)
For our last day, we did a whistle stop tour around the north of the island - visiting the various specialities of the island - SIM wine, a fish sauce factory, a pepper farm and a pearl farm (obligatory for any tour of the island). The highlight was bathing at the north west of the island - the water so clear that you could see the bottom. This area was only recently opened up to tourism (previously the miliitary had used it) so remains generally untouched with large amount of forest. However, with the emergence of huge hotel complexes in the area (the Vinpearl just opened a 750 room resort with an amusement and water park), I suspect that some of that remoteness will begin to be lost. So if you are going to visit Phu Quoc, I would suggest doing it soon!
