So it turns out that 4th March (the full moon day of the 6th lunar month) is Makha Bucha Day - a day when Buddhists go to the temple to make special observances. That meant it was also a public holiday for office workers - explaining the shed loads of people travelling on the river boat - and the even greater number of people at the Grand Palace paying their respects!
