We were picked up from our apartment near the Galata Tower at around 6am this morning by our tour guide and we were on our way to Gallipoli. It's about a 5 hr drive along the peninsular to the battle fields, and the traffic getting out of Istanbul was insane. We've just had quick coffee stop now back on the road again. Once again the weather is stunning 30+ and not a cloud site. The landscape here is interesting, we've passed by some quite large towns, plus heaps of fields of dying sun flowers ready to be harvested.
.... So now we have been to Anzac Cove, Lone Pine (in the photo) and Chunuk Bair cemeteries where the memorials of thousands of young kiwis are. Pretty moving experience. Had a great guide, a retired Turkish Historian who gave a really awesome overview of the whole disasterous Gallipoli campaign from both sides. It's been a very long day so far, and we've just started our 5 hr trip back to Istanbul.

Penny It's a very moving place isn't it! I was staggered by how alike the coastline & beaches are to Northland & I thought war can happen anywhere! Are they still finding bullet shells in the hills?
