On Tuesday we set off early in our rental car heading for the Amalfi Coast near Naples. We travelled down the main autostrade (A1) where there doesn't appear to be any speed limit. Along the way we passed Rome and Cassino before hitting the Naples area and finally the coastal city of Salerno. Form here we made our way along the amazing narrow winding Amalfi Coast road, hardly wide enough for 2 way traffic but as it rises high up into the rugged terrain the views are incredible. The local drivers are just like you see in the movies.... absolute maniacs and their passing manoeuvre's are nothing short of breathtaking. We found our apartment in Ravello working out the street address is in fact a track. See in the photo, the mules are carting building rocks down our street right past our entrance door. Our apartment was awesome, neat lady who owns it, there are just 6 rooms in the building and its perched on the edge of the cliff looking straight out over the coast. The town of Ravello is beautiful with a central piazza and of course little lanes, shops and restaurants are everywhere. We could easily have stayed another night or 3 hear, but.... Next morning we headed off to Pompei (Italians spell it with one i) this time driving across the ranges instead of along the coast....similar road conditions though. We found a place to park just a couple of minutes walk from the entrance to the ruins and spent a few hours wandering around this place in awe of how big and how sophisticated this city was, remembering that is was constructed in the period around 700 BC. To get a full appreciation of the significance of Pompei you should probably spend at least a day there.....but, another tank of gas and back on the road again!! On the way home to Cortona we stopped off at Cassino for lunch and recalled our visit here 4 years ago. It's a pretty special place although this time we literally had a sandwich then continued on. Today is Thursday, our last day here in Cortona before we move to London for the World Triathlon Champs, so I'm sitting in piazza Signorelli at my favourite cafe with a cafe latte strong and croissant watching the town come to life. Never get tired of this place.
