Stayed in townsville last night seems really nice city very chilled suburban feel. Fab seafront with a great tidal swimming pool which boys loved all very nicely done.
Done a fair bit of driving. Beautiful scenery. It's amazing all the properties seem so well kept - in the middle of nowhere but immaculate. All the creeks are named too which is amazing as there are so many of them!! But I guess thats what they use for addresses. Lots of sugar cane still. Is easy to see how all roads were cut off in floods is so so flat and low lying the roads are only inches from the creeks in lots of places. No signs of floodsin townsville but guess we just didn't see the affected parts when you see the size of the rivers flowing through you realise it must have been pretty terrifying.
The main road - the bruce highway ! Is bizarre pretty much one lane all the way and full of potholes etc. Can't believe is the main north south trunk road but then has next to no trAffic so guess don't need more lanes!! One very interesting observation I have made is that telegraph poles aren't straight still look like tree trunks v cool!!
Ayway 17 km out of townsville today we stopped at Billabong a wildlife sanctuary. And had a really good morning there. Cuddling koalas and wombats and snakes and lizards and crocs etc etc. Really interesting. Koalas are actually completely pointless. They have no predators and prey on nothing. They sleep for up to 23 hours a day and do not drink!! But are very very cute!!!
Interesting talk on crocs too. They get very bad press and don't really deserve it. Only 23 deaths by croc in oz in last 40 years and you can outrun them which is a comfort. Perfectly adapted creatures. Charlie completely transfixed by them - we may have next Steve irwin!!!!
Earlystart tomorrow very exciting day planned :-))))
