We were only in Nicuragua 4 nights, which is a shame because it was sooo cheap. The First day we caught 3 or 4 different buses- chicken buses, the seats are spaced for people with no legs and there is alot of beeping and yelling- to get to Ometepe. Oh and a boat as well to get there because its an island in the middle of a lake formed by 2 volcanoes.
Night one, we made the mistake of staying at an ëcological farm¨¨(read hippy commune) which was an experience if nothing else. Some people had been living there in the jungle ¨helping on the farm¨for up to 6 months. Lots of dreadlocks, weird hippy pants and for some reason the main activity on the farm was juggling or learning how to juggle.
Needless to say we moved early the next morning to Little Morgans which is across the road and is brand new and being run by an Irishman. It was far better nad just as good value as the farm. We caught fish from the lake to eat lived very cheap.
But it had to end and a few chicken buses and a boat later, we were in Managua, where we had to stay the night to catch a bus the next day. We only had 100 of the local currency (5 aussie dollars) left after we bought the tickets, and not wanting to go to an ATM again, we decided to see how far we could make it go. Walked for miles to a supermarket, and we actually bought a fair bit of food. Biscuits, fanta, bananas, corn flakes, milk, more bananas. Needless to say we had breakfast cereal for tea that night, but hey, we´re backpackers.
