Relocation, Relocation How I could do with Phil and Kirsty now. Yesterday I moved out of the Ashram (my guesthouse) into the Development Alternatives guesthouse, located on the top floor of the office. I've traded tranquil and reasonably well-kept grounds for a narrow dusty street. My cool, stone room is now a brick and concrete oven. The perfumed Ashram air doesn't waft over to this part of town.I don't even have a towel. On Saturday I was taken to view three properties, the standard number for a TV housing show. Property No. 1 was a room in a family's flat located in a large estate about 10 minutes taxi ride from the office. It had aircon and its own private bathroom, and the location was well placed for local amenities, but the price tag of INR 18,000 (exc. of air con electricity costs) was a little too rich for my blood. Also, this was quite a large family - I counted 8 people. Property No. 2 was a small one-room affair down a large dusty street, flanked by high walls garnished with what I think were jasmine flowers and well-kept farmhouse properties. The room - at INR 6000 - was cheap as chips but the bathroom was outside and the aircon nowhere to be seen.Property No. 3 was the cheapest at INR 4000, the closest being right opposite the office, but it just wasn't me. Perched on the third floor it reminded me of a rocket-launch position you see used by Middle-Eastern rebel factions on news footage. As I approached the doorway, I made room for a small gent to exit with the two large shards of glass he was holding in his left hand.I was promised that they were going to whitewash the room and adjacent bathroom. They could carpet bomb it and I still wouldn't have moved in.If I was still at the Ashram I wouldn't be too concerned.I could have quite happily stayed there for another month whilst the search continues, but this recent change in my living standards has forced me to approach the issue like my sex life and take matters into my own hand(s). So I have found a site for Expats in the city and contacted those looking for flatmates. Have had a number of replies and hope to get some viewings in this week.Fingers crossed!
