Tallinn is an unknown gem. It is the capital of Estonia which few people know. It is the very antithisis of Russia as the people are very friendly and the stores are excellent and not too expensive. It is a 'can do' society, which I suppose happens when you are small and want to make a mark. The weather was good which also helps - 32 degrees at midday. And while we were enjoying the hot weather at 60 degrees North of the equator, we gave a thought to all the poor South Africans shivering at 10 degrees.
We have now left Tallinn and enjoying a day at sea which has for the most been very misty. The air is punctuated by the sound of the ship's foghorn sounding every minute. I noticed at one stage that there was an answering foghorn not too distant from our ship. Thank goodness for radar. How the ships managed before that I don't know as it is impossible to see further than about 100 meters in any one direction and as we are doing about 20 knots we cover 100 meters in 10 seconds - not enought time to take evasive action if there is another craft straight ahead!
Fran and I attempted to climb the wall at the stern of the ship this afternoon. To my surprise I managed to do that and have the evidence to prove it to those of you who doubt it! I am proud of Fran as she also managed to climb and ring the bell at the top.
Tomorrow we dock at Gothenburg, so I will sign off until then.

Phil The picture reminds me of Italy. Its funny how the popular places are all full of dull people, but the quaint towns are rich with history and culture. Estonia... wow. ..Sounds like a must-visit! Enjoy the sunny skies (from a cold jhb)...
