Recap from my birthday weekend:
So Saturday started with my first South African rugby match. It was the most people I have ever be at a math so seeing stands of people watching and having not proved myself yet, I had a bit of pressure. The best part was that Hans-georg cam and brought some of m flat mates to the match so while it was about 20 minutes away I still had people there cheering me on J it made me happy.
The game itself was fun but exhausting. I played every position in the backline, and at one point we had three girls out of the game (two for threatening to fight a girl who kicked our player in the head after she had touched the ball down for a tri, and one was thrown out for playing the ball on the ground twice). Basically the ref was against us and decided that we should only have 11 girls vs. their 15. So, with all of the players missing I was playing flyhalf, outside center, and fullback all at once. This may seem impossible, but I would literally get the ball from the scrum, pass to the inside center, then run outside her to get the ball and run or get it out to the wing. Then whenever the ball was kicked I was the only one left in the back line who could kick so I would retreat to get the ball kick it and chase. It was insane, but with some help from the scrum I managed to make a tri in that time J which made me very happy. In the end we actually won, despite everything being against us, and I was named tackler or the game by the coach. Although I really don't remember making good tackles. This means I get a reward of alcohol or something later.
After all of that some of the girls came back and went to the Irish pub in town (Brazen Head). During which time we talked about the game, I had some beers, and we watched the Sharks play the lions in the Rugby Super 14. The girls are nothing like my team back home, but for now they will do to keep my Saturdays have a little rugby fun in them. After about 2 hours we left and a couple of the girls brought me home. Then it was all down hill from there. In true rugby fashion I didn't shower, made some really bad rice because I knew that I needed to eat, and then played kings with my flat mates in the common area.
Then, we went back to Brazen Head so that Chris and Alex could get something to eat, and I chose to not drink for a little while. Then we met us with everyone again at Terrace which is usually a pretty fun place. Sadly, though they are worse on weekends with the only music being South African techno and rock that isn't very good. But, I managed to find Timmy (my hippie flat mate) who proceeded to tell everyone that it was my birthday night causing about 5 more drinks to come my way. Now I am starting to get tired having not had my after game nap that I have back home. So, it's about 12 we all cheer for my birthday and I hang in there for awhile longer. Then at about 12:30 Chris, Alex, and I decide that the music is too loud and crappy to stay there any longer so we left for another bar that is chiller. We go there long enough for one beer and then we decide to call it a night. I knew they if I stayed out longer I could get there, but I would also black out/throw up. So, I opted against filling the 21st birthday stereotype and stumbled on home with the guys. I made it home at about 1:30-2 (my phone no longer tells the correct time since I dropped it like 5 times throughout the night). My roommate was in our kitchen with some boy, so I came in my room and literally passed out.
I hurt and am a little bruised from the match, but I didn't blackout and can recall back the whole night. So I would say that while I didn't last late I had quite the successful birthday night. My 21st was great and I love everyone here for coming to my game and going out with me. Yay for friends in places where you need friends J
