We left Vang Vieng at 8am, after saying goodbye to Linn, Kate and Jake we drove for 6 1/2 hours to Luang Prabang, only stopping a couple of times so we could stretch our legs and get some food. The scenery along the drive was lovely, although the roads were really bendy and we spent most of our time going up or down the sides of mountains, with massive drops and not that many barriers. It was fine until you had huge lorries coming the other way and at times you wondered how you were both going to pass each other safely on the road. Amazingly I managed to fall asleep, I think I was so tired I could have slept anywhere.
After checking into our hotel we headed to a coffee shop for a mango smoothie and to cool down with the air conditioning, before a walk around town to explore. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO world heritage site and it is stunning. Walking around you could be in France (minus the temples), it is such a pretty place.
In the evening we went to the market for dinner, which cost less than a pound! You choose your veg, noodles and rice and then the lady fries it all for you before you add in spring rolls, etc. It was yummy and a bargin! We then spent the rest of the evening wondering around the night market.
The following morning Amy and I left the hotel at 5.30am to watch the Alms Service - this is where the monks come out of the temples and walk along the streets collecting food from the people on the streets, who mainly hand out sticky rice. It was a great thing to see, it was so peacefull and I have never seen so many monks in one place! But after such an early start I needed to go back to bed for a nap before I could even think about functioning for the day.
When I woke again at a more reasonable hour we headed back into town and headed to Phu Si, a temple 100 metres high (the steps were a killer in the heat). When we finally reached the top the view was amazing and you could look over the whole town. After the climb down a mango shake was needed and some time to cool down before heading to Wat Xieng Thong temple for a look around before heading for icecream!
Lovely place with so many great things to do but it was far too hot - will have to come back again to finish exploring one day!
