Woke to a beautiful day, then back to the train station to book tickets for Tuesday, we had planned to go to Venice but overnight changed our minds and are now heading for Lyon, this is going to be a long trip, 10 hours of travelling and two train changes,
All sorted the next plan was to find the centre of town and find a hop on, hop off bus, we have so far worked out this is the best way to get a quick overview of a city and you can then work out what tourist attractions appeal to you, good idea but once again we turn right and we should have gone left plus you need to look around and read signs, we walked for over 30 minutes and seemed to be getting no where, eventually I stopped a girl and asked where the city centre was and naturually she pointed back in the direction we had come from, OK turn around and go back and walked and walked, eventually came across some weekend markets on the walkway of the river and headed for there, found the ticket office and waited for the next bus, by this time the weather had change and the rain was starting, boarded the bus and did a complete circuit finally getting off to tour the fortress that over looks Salzburg, now to get to the top you have to take a cable type of car to the top, or as the girl in information advised 'You can walk to the top" are you kidding me!!!! Cable car was fantastic and getting to the top the views are awesome, it took us over two hours to complete the tour, one section held the state rooms and bed chamber and private quarters, all of these rooms are in original condition, the ceilings are painted wood with ornate carvings, the walls are original but apparently the bottom half of the walls were covered either in silk or leather to keep the cold out and due to time the materials have rotted away and just the bare wood walls are there but the top half still has all the paintings and carvings, once again I am in awe of what was built so many years ago, the fortress was started in 1077 by an archbishop and over the years many an archbishop has further enlarged the fortress and grounds to be what it is today and apparently is the only fortress that has never been conquered during all turmoils. End of history lesson, the little bit I do know, but it is truly impressive.
Back down on the ground we walked around what was like a market square with a beautiful church, we decided not to get back on the tour bus but to walk around the city, went down some lane ways with quaint old shops.
The only down side to today was the rain, not heavy but annoying, businesses in Salzburg are closed on Sundays so we found it very hard to find a place to have dinner.
Monday 2nd Sept.
Today we headed for Innsbruck, approximately a two hour train trip, it was still raining in Salzburg and didn't look as though it was going to improve,
I know I have mentioned before but the country side was beautiful, everything lush green, the rain followed us and as we got closer to Innsbruck the mountains got higher and although the clouds were really down around them we could see the snow on some of the higher mountains.
Arriving we then got on a shuttle bus out to the Swarovski centre, and had a look at the exhibition, it was interesting but I was disappointed that they didn't have a display of what the actual raw crystal is like and how they process it to get it to the final product, but there were some beautiful pieces of crystal, and I don't for one minute regret doing the tour, finally ending up in the actual crystal shop, I was so good I only bought a pen and a christmas decoration.
Leaving the centre, caught the bus back to the station but we had just missed the train back to Salzburg, so had a walk around the city centre, by this time the rain had stopped and we did get a few minutes of sunshine.
Back in Salzburg it was still raining so grabbed a few food items and headed back to the hotel.
