Arrived in Hervey Bay in the afternoon, not much there really, went for a walk along the beach and then just had an early night as up at 630am for Fraser Island.
26th Jan - Australia Day!! Got picked up nice and early and got the ferry over to Fraser, was unbelievably hot at like 830am! Thats not supposed to happen...Upon arriving at the island we met our ranger called graham who then challenged us to design the best nametags, a bottle of white wine was the prize. Therefore mine was coordinated pink and purple with pictures of hearts martini glasses flowers the sun.....maybe i'm a bit too competeive BUT i did win!!!! Quite good as there were 38 people! We then set off to Basin Lake. The journey was amazing! Like a rollar coaster no joke as all the roads are sand so you fly around all over the place and regularly come across people stuck in the sand! Once we got to the lake we all went sminning and relaxed on the white beach around it. We then did a 45min rainforest walk to central station, and i didnt even moan too much, only when i got bitten by a mozzie! Unfortunately when we finished our walk lunch was supposed to be there but the 4X4 had got a punture so we had to wait for it to be fixed and amuse ourselves playing cards with some girls from kent and birmingham. When it arrived we then went off to lake mackenzie for a really nice buffet lunch. This lake is the one in the picture, was really beautiful crystal waters and really warm. Stayed there for the afternoon before heading back to the resort. In the evening we had lots of drinks for ozzie day and all got given rather fetching yellow hats with Australia on it. There was also a karoke and free mexican food. The singing was pretty bad! Chicken out and laughed at others instead.
On the sat we had an early start and drove done to the 90mile beach and visted the Maheno shipwreck, then onto the coloured sands and then to Indian head. I sat in the front on the way to the northerly point which was quite fun! I was on dingo watch but failed... At Indian head we climbed up to the top and had wicked views over the beaches and sand dunes. Also saw a manta ray, tuna , reef shark and a tiger shark in the sea, oh and terrance the turtle. Was really scary up there cause was sitting right on the cliff edge! After that we drove round to Champagne pools for lunch, i was quite disapppointed that there was no actual champange, just little pools with bubbles... Had a sleep there on the beach before journeying to El creek. That was really pretty natural creek with a strong current. Did the broadwalk to the end and walked back through the creek. On the way back to the resort we stopped off at a really cool lookout over sand dunes, we also learnt about the swirls on the trees which is done by an insect, it looks very weird! In the eve we went for a swim and spa at the resort and then had drinks with Helen and Sam, Pete and our ranger Graham before heading down for pizza and pasta dinner and drinking games!!
On the final day we went to the Lake Wabby lookout, which is a huge area of sand dunes with a beautiful lake on one side. We then did a 30min walk through the rainforest to the lake which was a bit hard cause of the slight hangover! Arrived at the lake and a few people tried sand boarding into it. I adopted for sunbathing but was cut short of that by rain!! Oh well it was bound to rain at some point. We then did another 30min walk over the dunes, very bizzare lile being in a desert. Then headed to the Eurong resort for lunch and back to lake mackenzie in the afternoon. Was a wicked trip all in all and our guide, sorry ranger, was really good. Was a good group too and sad to leave everyone back at Hervey Bay. In the eve in Hervey we went to the Irish pub for dinner at met up with Helen sam and Pete again. Live music and a few drinks.
