We met up with Liza T this morning for a day of sight-seeing from the Thames River. We joined a 'hop on-hop off' river boat cruise from the Houses of Parliament to Greenwich and return. We saw many sites of significant historical or cultural importance including:
- Houses of Parliament & Big Ben
- the many bridges - e.g. Westminster Bridge, London Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Tower Bridge, Waterloo Bridge (the Ladies bridge).
- replica of the Golden Hind
- Tower of London
- Cleopatra's Needle
- St Paul's Cathedral
- Greenwich Royal Observatory & Royal Maritime Museum
- HMS Belfast moored in the River as a floating museum
- the Shard (the tallest building in Western Europe)
- the London Eye.
We stopped for a drink at the 'Gypsy Moth Pub' at Greenwich beside the 'Cutty Sark' and then walked through the foot-tunnel under the Thames to the other side of the river.
Rejoining the tour we past other special places:.
- where Charles Dickens wrote 'Great Expactations'
- where some scenes from 'Oliver' were filmed
- a replica of Shakespeare's thatched roof building used now to present his plays.
We learned much the history of trade along the Thames River e.g. WHARF is an acronym WareHouse Along the River Front.
A magic day especially as we could share it with Liza!!
