After a pretty restless nights sleep, we planned on hiring a motorbike out for the day (70,000d) to take a trip down south to a town called Hoi An which was 20km from china beach, about a 25 minute drive down the coast. Luckily it was just a straight road all the way to Hoi an because when the bike we hired arrived it was a manual scotter, I'd never drove a manual bike before so I knew straight away that it was going to be a challenge, especially with the road laws out here, basically there isn't any, but it's the best way of travelling around so I was really looking forward to it, but then i remembered that jeni is not the best passenger on a bike and gets extremely nervous and agitated, which made me very nervous also, which is the last thing you need when driving on a Vietnamese road! But it didn't take long to get the hang of the manual bike and in no time we were in the very picturesque and old town of Hoi An, such a pleasant little place, with a massive Chinese/Japanese influence in the buildings and temples. We visited Tan Ky House which was over 200 years old and has Vietnamese/Chinese/Japanese architecture all over and very well preserved. Seven generations of a family lived and were still living there. We both decided that it was definitely time to hit the beach so jumped back on the bike and headed back to coast to Cua Dai beach which was one of the more populated beaches in the area due to the many backpackers staying in the Hoi An area, where we both agreed that we should've have definitely stayed for a least a night or two now that we've seen how nice it is, but we'll definitely be back!
Once we lost the sun we headed for a beach restaurant for dinner, for starter we had white rose which was a floppy rice paper with a dice of fish sandwiched in the middle and crispy wontons, both amazing, I had stewed pork in a hot pot and steamed rice with vegetables for my main and was delicious and Jeni had squid in satay sauce which was not so nice unfortunately!
We were earlier approached by some PR's on the beach who were westerner's promoting a bar which we found a bit surprising so after dinner decided to try and find this bar and have a drink before heading home, until I realised that there was abit of a problem with our bike.... it didn't have any lights, so instead of finding the bar we made our way, slowly and steadily, back to our GH. We got back to the room and this is when I decided to have another check under the bed for our other lodger... the cockroach.... and there it was, hiding under the bed and the rest is history (see cockroach wars blog).
