Yet again we had a semi painless journey down to Penang, Malaysia. The further south we get the less stressful they are getting. However, we did not enjoy being up at 5.30am to get the coach for 6, which shockingly was late. On our buses, we met a family who was on a one year gap year and a girl that went to the same college as Jess, small world. We also bumped into the two Swedish guys from our Phi Phi trip at a service station and then at the border.
We arrived in Georgetown, Penang around 5pm that evening. We were staying at the Red Inn, Love Lane, which was surprisingly nice and new. This was our 1st dorm experience and we were very apprehensive of staying in one as we were worried about other people coming in and waking us up, which we later realized them people are US. The beds were really big and comfortable, Jess had top bunk i had bottom bunk, however, we had to pay for a blanket, you assume that these come with the bed when you book it, was very odd. After dropping our ever growing backpacks we headed out for dinner, we were told to go to Red Garden. This place was brilliant, it was like a food court, you sit on plastic tables and chairs, a man comes over to serve you drinks, and then you walk around all the different stalls, order your food and they bring you over the food and you pay. We loved this idea, but we got a little carried away, we had a sushi platter, some dodgy fish/shrimp ramen noodle soup, spring rolls & roosted pork noodles...was tasty!! After stuffing our faces, we wanted to go to bed, but thought 8.30pm was a little too early so we went for a beer in a bar called Soi Eleven. We settled down to watch the dodgy live band and our 'charity' jug of Tiger beer; i assume none of the money we spent on it went to charity. We played some table football and some pool; i was shockingly bad at table football. We moved to a different side of the bar after pool to where there was some life, this could have been the move of the night that was the thing i regret. We discovered that they did 2 4 1 cocktails, so we ordered two long beach island ice teas, you can probably guess where this lead, we met some ozzzy guys, the one in question was Rodney (lol) who proceeded to ply us with cocktails till 2am. These cocktails i will point out where strong, foul and tasted different every time we got one, and we had a fair few. So our early night was well and truly gone, so at 2.30ish we entered our dorm room, trying to desperately keep quiet in our drunk state, however, we got the giggles, dropped stuff, i played with the air con and generally making noise but then constantly telling the other to 'SHHHHHH'
Surprisingly the next morning Emma & Dan where not pissed off with us, i think they found it funny how drunk we were, and the other guy in our room was gone before we woke up. Oh i forgot to mention Jess and I were in the biggest amount of pain. I believe Jess stated it as the worst hangover so far. This didn't stop us; we got a lovely greasy breakfast and tried to do some sightseeing. Georgetown is a bizarre place; it's just random places to eat mixed with guesthouses and not really anything to see. We did manage to the see the 'famous' house and the Church of Assumption (?) We stumbled across the Penang museum, which was a welcomed air conned venue for us. We proceeded to walk around the exhibits, suddenly Jess made a swift exit to the toilet, which i was a bit puzzled about as i didn't see her leave, so i carried on walking round to then discover that she was emptying the contents of her stomach into the toilet. I believe this is Jess' cultural lowest point. So as i tried to enjoy the museum, jess made friends with the porcelain and then a chair. We decided it was best to head back to the hostel, for our health and to prevent any vomit on any historical artifacts. We ended up chilling in the common room watching James Bond, with two Ozzy boys Nick and Zander. Zander looked identical to Johnny from the OC. After some much recuperation we had a bit of a s***ty Indian with the ozzy boys, Josh from our dorm room and some others in our hostel. We then grabbed some beer, (jess had coke) and sat outside or hostel with lots of people from our hostel and just chatted and drank with them all, at 12 we were kicked off the front so we headed to the Reggae bar for some more beer, Jess had started drinking by this point. So yet again we had another 2am night, but this time everyone except the random Asian guy in our room were out with us so it wasn't too bad.
The next morning we lugged our tired sorry asses out of bed to walk our huge bags to the bus station about half a mile away from our guest house. This bus was the best one we have ever been on, huge seats and a movie in English. 5 hours on the coach to Kuala Lumpur.
