So we arrived in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and was dropped off at the Central station, but we had no idea where we were, later we found out we were just down the road, but like any tourist we hailed a cab to get us to our hotel. Our hotel is in the heart of Chinatown, next to the market, so trying to lug our backpacks through this was amusing as my bag is bigger than me. We were staying in the Hotel Chinatown Inn, which was nice, staff not so happy but i can deal with this for hot water, fresh towels and air-con. Still lacking a window in our room though, seems to be a common trend in South Asia. We had a wander around the Chinese market which was just like bloody Kho San road, stalls crammed of fake stuff. We had dinner just off the road on some lovely plastic furniture they love over here. We had spicy rice and roasted duck, was uber tasty. Dinner was followed by an Oreo Mcflurry and then bed.
We rose early to catch the monorail to try and get tickets to go up the PETRONAS towers, we arrived there at 8.30am which they advised in the lonely planet, this was too late, they had sold out, they advised we get there for 7am, we decided this was a stupid plan. We headed for some breakfast and some buckets of coffee. We visited the KL tower in the Centre of the city, which apparently has a higher observation tower than the towers and was a lot cheaper. The views were amazing, although it was a bit misty we got a great panoramic view of the city and we had an audio tour, so I learnt so much about the city as well. After the tower, we headed back to the towers to visit the aquarium; this was spectacular, excluding the large number of screaming kids and the snakes. This aquarium was so much better than the one in London, was so much more interactive. They had so many varieties of fish here; some of them were bigger than me. The best part was the tunnel you went through on a conveyer belt under the tank so all the fish and sharks swam around and above you, the diver was also dressed in a Santa outfit.
Being out here makes you forget that Christmas is looming, well until you hit the malls, KL is one big city with lots of fancy malls and huge sky scrapers. The KLCC shopping Centre at the base of the towers was very Christmassy and busy, like any mall would be at home, and it made me feel like i was at home as i did a little shop at topman. We also had some very cheap lunch here too in the food court. After here we headed to Bukit Jalin to the Low Yats Mall, where i purchased my lovely new laptop and had my 1st Christmas Starbucks. We made a swift attempt to get home, but of course like usual tourist we headed the wrong way on the monorail. That evening we just tried looking for the restaurants the lonely planet suggested, surprise surprise they weren't open or closed down, good work lonely planet. So we opted for the usual favorite plastic chairs restaurant, where Jess was braved and got a whole fish, which surprisingly was really tasty.
So on the 28th we thought it was best do some more culutural excursions, so we went to the national museum; this was near the big park in KL, near lots of other places to visit. The museum was very new and had very fancy interactive parts of it. Each exhibit was about different eras of Malay history. My favorite exhibit was about the monarchy (probably a secret monarchist). I learnt that Malaysia has 7 Royal families and they elect a new king every 4 years from one of the 7 Sultans. None of them looked like the Sultan from Aladdin :( Surprise surprise the heavens opened up when we left the museum, and ducked into the planiterum, where we saw an amazing show about the history of space travel, I never been to a planetarium, so i was so amazed by it all. At this point it was about 2pm and we hadn't ate all day as we hadn't found anywhere to get any food, we stupidly said we would eat when we got to these places, and like most of Malaysia it is badly sign posted and we couldn't find anywhere, until we came across the Aviary. We filled our faces full and then entered the world's largest outdoor bird aviary, and by god it's HUGE. We saw so many different types of birds, you name it i probably saw it. This day was so humid, so walking around here was making me drip i was so hot, my body does not enjoy humidity, but we are in Malaysia's wet season. The best part of the aviary was when Jess tried to get a close up of one of the stalks eating and she didn't realize the other bird was peking at her bag as she was standing on its fish, then as she tried to move, a another hit her with its wing. It was very funny to watch as she tried to escape being surrounded by big birds. Overall the aviary was very impressive. that evening we were bored of plastic chair dining so we got the monorail into the city, and had a fancy Italian near the PETRONAS towers, which was nice aswe got away from china town and all the men trying to sell you crap while you ate. We chased dinner with an ice cream, one scoop of after eight flavors and Rocher rocher, was far too tasty for words.
Our last full day in KL, we had a nice lie in, we chilled in bed. We were enjoying having a private room as we won't have one until January now. Jess booked our coach down to Singapore and we downloaded some music .Our destination today was another mall in the suburbs in Bangsar called mid- Valley, apparently it was suppose to be less busy than central KL. This place is very much like Westfield, which isn't surprising as it's advertised as the most western shopping mall. We wandered aimlessly around it, window shopping and loving the Christmassy feel to it. We grabbed some lunch and went and booked our Harry Potter tickets for later that afternoon. Jess bought some new shorts to replace the petrol stained ones and i surprisingly didn't buy anything apart from some toiletries. We watched Harry potter which is great, but very dark. It was so weird to not watch it with the usual HP lovers.I won't say anymore just in case you haven't seen it yet. But i got to say i do love KL, i know you all think it's because there is a lot of shopping to be done, and you aren't wrong, but it's a nice cross between east and west. Dinner on our last night we had supposed traditional food in a place called Precious in the Central Market, I had some chicken dish with coconut rice.
We are now on our last leg of our south East Asia part of the trip, i am sad to be leaving Asia. We definitely did not have enough time to see everything I wanted to see but I'm sure I'll come back here again, maybe with a larger budget. Now on a bus to Singapore on my shiny new laptop, the bus is very nice and spacious but the bus terminal was a joke, it was just a large marquee with hundreds of firms trying to sell you bus tickets, luckily we had booked so we just had to pick up a ticket, otherwise it would have been so intimidating. Last 5 days in Singapore and then we head to Perth to the sunny beaches.
