Back on the road we pulled in at a little known spot called Agnes Water and 1770 named because Captin Cook came ashore here in 1770! The best thing about it is that it has a lovely beach with great surfing lessons cheap at only $17 bargin!
We spent the night camped at Workmans beach and headed to surf school the next morning, only to discover that a Cyclone weather front had whipped up the sea and it was going to be pretty rough going... Ben and I seem destined to have the bad weather follow us on this trip, Aussie's keep telling us its the worse summer for 80 years and that they never have this much rain in the wet season!
Our surf instructor said it would be fine and that we would all catch a wave, so with a bit of practice we hit the water in groups of four. Ben and I were in the last group and we watched as everyone ahead of us went in and made surfing look easy! Then it was our turn, Ben went in first and after a bit of practice he actually surfed and caught a great wave which i didn't think to capture on video! It was a brilliant moment. Then it was my turn and after swallowing a gallon of sea water and with a little bit of help from our teacher I did manage to stand up on the board, but then got my feet tangled in my safety cord so came off the board pretty quick.....
Thankfully later that afternoon they downgraded the weather front from a Cyclone to five days of rain just in time for Christmas.
That afternoon we made the short journey to Hervey Bay and checked into a great YHA campsite, we had booked ourselevs onto a guided tour of Fraser Island for the following day.
We got on our bus the next morning with 52 other people but realised the closer we got to Fraser the worse the weather was getting, it was such a shame but the trip was a bit of a wash out. The island itself is a real mix of rainforest, sandy beaches, sand dunes and rock formations, and although the weather hadn't been great we were glad we went.
