Day 6 and we woke up to a rainy Boredeaux. Undeterred we checked out of our studio apartment (after a breakfast of cornflakes - amazing!) and headed to the marché des capuchins, bordeaux's daily food market.
After wandering around the various meat, oyster and fruit and veg stalls, we wandered into the city centre along rue Saint Catherine, Europe's longest shopping street. Briefly pausing for a café creme, we headed to La Boite aux Huîtres for a dozen Arcachon oysters and white wine during a brief glimpse of sun!
As the sky blackened we admitted defeat and jumped into the car to head to San Sebastian just as the heavens opened! On the way we stopped off at the beach at Moiliets - apparently a bit of a french holiday spot - and, ignoring the clouds, had a beer on the sand before dipping a toe in the Atlantic...
Back on the road to San Seb and several toll booths later we reached Spain and our apartment in the centre of town. My friend Sara has set us up with the most amazing place overlooking the surfer's beach and the Atlantic. Very exciting!
After a few parking issues, we got changed and headed into the old town to meet Sara and began our pintxos tour. We started with mini Kobe beefburgers and plantain crisps and crab risotto before moving onto a place that specialises in fresh anchovies with various topping served on bread - anchovy and coconut a surprisingly successful combination! More pintxos followed including braised calves cheek and deep fried chilli peppers with alioli (accompanied by cider) but the final hurdle was an enormous fore rib of beer that had barely touched the grill!! All washed down with lots of red wine and good chats.
