Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
After seeing some of the old Route 66 and it's landmarks we decided to carry on on the trail, this took us to the Cozy Dog Diner to start with, the home of the Cozy Dog. Which is essentially a battered hot dog on a stick, but the little diner had lots of trinkets and items for sale all dedicated to Route 66. The food was great, Marie actually had the Cozy Dog, whereas I just had a chilli dog. The place was so busy when we were there, so we got a couple of souvenirs and set off on our way, one of the souvenirs we bought was a Route 66 map, which really helped find some of the other landmarks there were in Illinois. So after Cozy Dog we set off for St. Louis aiming to stop at all the landmarks we could find. Marie was on photo duty because the amount of retro signs and odes to the old 66 were everywhere. We tried stopping at the gas station museum but it had shut down sadly, but Litchfield was the next area we got to, and this place really honoured the "Main Street of America", there were banners on the lampposts, painted signs on the actual roads and even a Route 66 museum. When we arrived, we went to Dairy Queen first and set about trying one of their Blizzard milkshakes that are served upside down, I had an Oreo one and Marie had a small m and m one, I was a little disappointed with her. We stopped at the Ariston Cafe and Jubelts bakery, both of which had been there since the Route was an actual road through the country, and the museum was just across the road. We went in and placed a map pin on their map of where we were from, because nobody had visited from East Anglia yet, and the lovely lady told us of some of the stories about the local area. We took some photos, a bumper sticker and then set off on our way. We tried to go to Country Classic Cars but unfortunately we arrived 30 minutes after it closed, so we took a list of their inventory instead and took a few photos from the gate. Next was the Bunny ranch, run by a gentleman named Henry, who'd been doing so for around 28 years, running a small Route 66 inspired gift shop, with rabbits inside!! He had about 10 rabbits and all of them lived with him at the ranch, he told us all about them and how he became an owner of a Route 66 landmark. We had a look round his grounds and saw the 8 foot bunny and the graveyard with tributes to lost pets in the area. The whole shop was set up in an ancient garage which looked like it had been there for years. But this was to be our last stop before St. Louis and after we drove through some dodgy neighbourhoods after going the wrong way, we arrived safely. We got cookies on our arrival at camp, and it was the busiest one we had been to yet. We quickly found a nice pub, called the Pacific Brew Haus, just a few miles down the road. I had a few beers as marie said she would drive the long journey back. I had a bacon and Cheeseburger and Marie had a huge sandwich with chicken and bacon that she didn't quite finish, and so took home in a doggy bag, a really good day all round.
