Today we got up around 9am, made breakfast then headed to the sand-dunes on '90 Mile Beach' - this beach is actually around 60 miles long, pretty big!! We knew that we could rent a sand-board from 10am so got there for then. The lady told us how to use them properly and where to go, then we set off climbing the huge sand-dunes! It took quite a while to get to the top which was very tiring as they really are massive! We looked out over 90 Mile Beach and down the coast taking in just how big it was.
We went over to the sand-dune with the biggest slope and Ben went first jumping on his board and flying down the hill! You pick up a lot of speed going down, and because it had rained most of the day before, the sand was still wet which meant you could go faster! Luckily for us today was nice and sunny, so we went up and down for quite a while! The lady said don't stand on the board and go down, as you might hurt yourself. But towards the end we thought we would have a little go at doing it standing up and sort of surfing/snowboarding down. We didn't do it from the very top… probably from like a third of the height, and we were pretty good at it. None of us got hurt and we made it all the way to the bottom.
After this we were quite sandy so the lady said there was a freshwater lake down the road we could rinse off in. We aren't sure if we went to the right lake, as her directions didn't make much sense to what we drove past and she described, but we did find one! After walking through a field we got to it, and Lloyd went in first. He said it was full of reeds and very cold, so Tim and Ben decided against it… even though he said it was nice once you were in! We got all the sand of us by brushing it as it was dry now, and Lloyd dried off with a towel…. Then we made the 6 hour journey to Auckland, taking it in turns to drive. We stopped to make lunch half way to make lunch and have a break. We went back to the campsite we stayed in Auckland before, made dinner, got showered, then got an early night ready for a more exciting day tomorrow!
