We woke up at Skaj and Fozzy's house ( Nathan and Shaun's mates ) made breakfast, then head off back to Franz Josef where the Fox Glacier is. The scenery along the way was beautiful as usual, which doesn't make the journey seem as long - 5 hours! We arrived at the same hostel/campsite we stayed at last time we were here. This is the one where we actually met Nathan and Shaun in the hot-tub originally…. It's not how it looks!! After parking up, we had a soak in the hot-tub before making dinner.
That night we had a couple drinks in the bar there, but literally only two as we didn't want to be hangover for the skydive and we were hoping the weather was going to be good!! Whilst in their we bumped into a guy called Michael and his mate Jase. It was really weird as we hadn't seen Mike since Thailand where he was on our scuba diving course… so we chatted to him for a while before getting an early night.
The next morning we woke up feeling fresh, and when we looked outside it was some of the best weather we had seen so far in New Zealand!... we were in luck! This got us really excited so we got ready, had a quick bowl of Weetabix then headed off to Fox Glacier 20 minutes away. When we arrived the guy there confirmed it was all good to go ahead, so we signed some forms saying it was possible we could die blah blah…. Usual jargon! We waited for some others to turn up, then got all the gear on!
One guy said he had worked there a week, the other said it was his first jump… but we knew they were just winding us up and it didn't faze us… we were just excited to finally be able to do it! The plane they take you up in is very small, but powerful… the guy said it costs about £150,000 for the engine! As we took off we started to see the amazing views, then at 10,000 feet we were given oxygen to breathe. This skydive is rated as having the second best views in the world, with the first being Mount Everest!
As we got to 16,000 feet it was time to jump. Tim was at the front next to the door so went first, then Lloyd, then the Scottish guy who was doing it too. Lloyd said he watched Tim from above and it looked as if he was still free-falling and spinning near to the ground, but the guy Lloyd was strapped too assured him he wasn't! When Tim's parachute was pulled after the free-fall his instructor made him look up so he could see Lloyd free-falling too. The views were out of this world!... and we won't see a better site again in our life ( unless we skydive Mount Everest! ) We dropped around 3000 feet above the highest point in NZ - Mount Cook, over the Fox Glacier, the rainforest and the beach. The glacier itself is amazing, it is 250 metres thick in some points and moves 1.8 metres a day. The glacier you see now is still from weather 5 years ago… so that gives you an idea of the size of it!
The instructors let us steer the parachutes for a while as well which was cool! They are really easy to turn, you literally just pull your arm down on the straps the way you want to turn. At one point they made us pull one arm right down all the way, this makes you spin round and round and you can take in all the views! After the soft landing, it was high fives and big smiles all round….a massive buzz!
We then headed back, got some lunch and made the five hour journey back to Christchurch to the lads house! The skydive was worth every penny and all the traveling!! Life is goooooood….
