Today we have booked a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels - these were a network of tunnels created in the Cu Chi region, north of the city. They were used to connected villages as well as to be lived in during the day time when enemy soldiers would search the area. There was over 200km of tunnels with 5000 entrances and exits, they had made underground bunkers connected to the tunnels and trench system creating an underground village, with weapon workshops, kitchens, dinning halls and toilets.
It took 2 hours to drive there and our first point of call was a rest stop where you saw some of the victims of agent orange making hand made plates and pictures. Agent orange was a strong chemical used to destroy the plant life but had horrific effects on humans as well. This stop felt a bit awkward as I think the project to give them
Jobs was really good, however it felt a little bit showy!
Once we got there we walked around the complex and watched a film - we had been warned that it was a biased film and many people walk out. I can see why as it seemed it wasn't telling you any information, it just gloated about how the locals killed the Americans! This with our slightly crazy tour guide made it all feel a little awkward - however, it was really interesting and we learnt a lot about the war and what the locals went through during their time under ground. They had a lot of things set up to show you what the area had been like, with the traps and tunnels. We got to walk through one of the tunnels which has been enlarged slightly, but was still very small and hot! Near the end of the tour we got to go to a shooting range where I fired a M16 - this was really cool and was a good end to the day. We made our way back where we had a nice 2 hour snooze! Once back we had another walk around and grabbed some Kmart noodles (our Vietnamese 7eleven) and some sandwiches from our bakery! We then went back and watched a few films and ate our food!
We also had a go at a shooting range
