The next morning Frances drove us the the ferry terminal in Queenscliff and we said our goodbyes. My cousin Adrian, who works in Queenscliff, came to meet us for a quick coffee before we left which was good as he wasnt able to be home for the weekend. The ferry journey across Philip Bay to Sorrento only took about 40 minutes. In the afternoon I went to the pier, climbed into a wetsuit and caught the boat for my dolphin swim, leaving a concerned Ben behind (he doesnt trust dolphins...?!). We had a great afternoon for it, the sea was calm and the sun shining. The girl didnt even have time to finish giving us instructions of what we were supposed to do before dolphins were swimming alongside the boat! We all leaped off the duckboard and clung to the ropes either side at the back of the boat. You had to put your face in the water and look underneath to see the dolphins playing around below us. I didnt see any the first time, but later I saw 2 swimming right below me and then another 3. They were bottlenose dolphins, and very friendly although not tame enough for us to touch them. After swimming a few times, we all got back on the boat for hot chocolate and freshly made scones. As I was sitting at the bow, at least 10 dolphins came swimming up alongside the boat, doing leaps and rolls in the waves, totally showing off to everyone watching! Our boat also took us out to see the seal colony as well, but they were very very smelly!
The dolphin swim was absolutely amazing, best thing I've done so far. The girl on the boat said they are going to have to stop the swims there next year, as they are dredging the bay to make it deeper so that bigger ships can bring more trade into melbourne. The water will become saturated with loose sand and debri so that people wont be able to see the dolphins anymore, if the pod even stays around. It is such a shame, but I'm glad I got to see them before that happened. I just hope the dredging doesnt harm the dolphins.
After the swim my Uncle Mike and Auntie Jill came to collect us from Sorrento. They drove us up the coast, stopping to look at a rock formation called London Bridge, to their house in Cribs Point. For tea we had flake and chips aka a shark supper!! The shark was really tasty :)
