Windy Welly indeed! The capital of New Zealand is rather changeable weather-wise. It was a bit of a shock to the system after coming from the more tropical North of Nz. We had to pitch our tent in the gardens of Rowena's Hostel (Tip: Don't stay there, enough said.) in gale force winds and sheets of rain.
The next day was Waitangi Day, a celebration of Maori culture and a public holiday. The weather had really improved. In the morning we went up the Wellington Cable Car which offered us really good views of the city and a local cricket match as well! You can get a single ticket rather than get a return so you can walk back down the hill through Wellington Botanic Gardens. They were full of people having picnics, playing sports etc. so the atmosphere was really good. There was a similar feeling down beside the quayside where they had a concert in the gardens and lots of food stalls. After a few drinks, I think our general impression of Wellington had improved by the end of the day!
